Hi John,
I think the KRK RP5 are the best sound for cheap monitors. Around 289.00/pr.
I would be suspect on really cheap ones just being cheapo gamer speakers
in fancier box.

Blue Sky has a setup now with 30W nearfield satellites plus a
subwoof for $399. Haven't heard 'em myself, but I've seen some
good reviews. Might be worth looking into.

I've been talking to a very experienced/long track record mastering engineer
quite a bit lately and his take is to stay away from the Adams. I've never
even heard them myself, but he says that now that they have become so
popular, he 's getting a lot of mixes in here that were referenced on Adams
and the mixes he's getting in there that were done on Adam monitors have had
consistent issues that have required some pretty major corrections.

I'll see if I can get an elaboration on his findings.

I would very much appreciate if you'd follow up on that and report back. I'm
using Adam A7s with the sub as my main monitoring setup and checking on my
cheapo KRKs. So far I'm really impressed, I'd be interested in what your
guy has to say the problems are.

thanks for the great replies, i ordered the KRK rp5's from the amazing Chris
Ludwig and they will be here by dinner tonight. I can't wait. From everything
i'm reading they will be exactly what I need. Considering some amazing records
were produced on NS10's and these rp5's are getting reviews that in some
ways make these an upgrade from NS10's i'm really excited.

John,

NS10's are popular because they basically equate to everyman's generic cheap
stereo setup. There is nothing HiFi about them.

And because, people like hearing the question: "So, why do you
put tissue paper over the tweeters?"

:D

I got the RP5s and think they sound really nice. I'm very happy with them
and think they will totally help me make mixes that translate well.

I'd still be curious to hear from Deej as to what his mastering
guy pal had to say negatively about the ADAM's & the problems
he'd enocuntered with mixes done on them.

If anything, I'd have to take a wild guess and say: "too much
high end" - the few times I've heard the ADAM stuff, the high
end was so smooth & clear, & with imaging so preceise, that I'd
be inclined to believe that it might want to make you push more
of it. IOW, it'd still translate well over the ribbons, but
over regular tweets, it might be too much.

Deej, is my wild guess right?

you can search for Adam on gearslutz for a lot of posts on them. they seem
to be very well liked and we all know monitors are about as personal as it
gets.

Neil,

Here's his take on them......

.........normally mixes from ADAMS are notorious for being "polite" in =
the 1 to 4KHZ range and lacking authentic vocal sound character.
Also, the bottom around 80hz is sometimes thin on the mix. I simply =
have heard a "sound signature" of thin bass punch,
polite sounding snares and rolled off top on mixes.

;o)

Heard these at a Corner Music a while back and was really surprised, esp.
