I recently upgraded to C4 from SX1. I've been using Samplitude up 'til
now, but got kind of fed up with certain Sam limitations.

I am so impressed with C4 and it's capabilities. I love patching in
outboard f/x with delay compensation. I actually dig many of the
included f/x plugs and the Studio eq is not too shabby. I was just
messing with the envelope shaper on a snare and could get a ton of
control with it (trick I just found: when snare fills need more oomph,
automate the release time and open it up for the fill - makes them big
and ballsy).

One of the reasons I switched away from Sam is it has a kind of
incomplete or sloppy aspect to it. They add new features but don't
complete or integrate them fully. C4 is totally the opposite - a very
slick, pro bit o' kit.

I'm contemplating something DJ will no doubt appreciate. There are some
excellent f/x in Sam I would like to be able to patch into from C4, but
they are proprietary. Can I run Sam on a separate machine and patch via
the sends out thru ADAT LP into a channel in Sam with the f/x on it? I
wonder if it senses the actual delay or just computes it from the driver
latency settings? If it just computes it will not compensate for the
delay into and out of the Sam machine's sound card. When I get time to
install sam on the other machine I'll check it out.

If you are looking for a really excellent, mature and robust DAW I do
recommend C4.

Bill,

Once you've got all of your VST I/O set up for a project and you are using a
bunch of external gear. Close cubase, turn off your computer, then reboot
and launch Cubase and tell me if all of your patching has been saved or if
you've got to go back and repatch at least some of it.
this is a big problem if you're using lots of analog gear in a mix. I've to
26 analog I/O in my rig and 20+ analog outboard processors. this can be a
big issue if I've got a mix happening with lots of stuff patched in, then I
reopen the project and my patching is not working and I have to reinvent the
wheel.

C4 is fantastic and also buggy. They developers are pretty sloppy and
as a result the app is NOT one that many can use in a pro studio. I
love it but it does have warts. As long as it does what you want then
it's fantastic. Like I said, I love it.

Check out my notes.

I don't love them enough to buy them.

I only have a couple things patched so far, and they always come back.

Well that's good Bill. I hope you don't encounter the sporadic problems that
I have here. It's not just me either. Others have reported this with Cubase
4. I do agree that (other than my few"issues") it's a dream program and is
one of the main reasons I decided tha it was time to learn a new DAW. Don't
count on a lot of support from the cubase.net forum. this place is more
useful than the Cubase user's group for Cubase problems because Neil and
John are here.

There's about 20 more here:
http://www.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=27

Don't get me wrong, it's a great program and I love it, but there are bugs
and instabilities that pros in the cubase forum mention regularly to such
severity that they can't move over to C4 yet.
