When describing compressors I read references to "wonderful musical pumping".
What is that? Are there any songs I can hear that do it clearly? I thought
compressor pumping was bad. hmm

big tings gwan wid da pumpin mon,
or to put it another way, sidechain a compressor over the main stereo mix,
using a kick drum as the trigger. Used in loads of dance music over here
(mainly main room bass breaks and fourfour funky house, etc (sorry, does
that even mean anything to you guys lol!). See Daft Punk (french house) for
good examples. It basically gives the whole song a 'pumping to the rythmn
of the kick drum' feel.
There was a good technique article in SOS about doing it with Reason:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep08/articles/reasontech_09 08.htm (sorry,
it's an Esub article), and a good little video on youtube by a recent hit in
the UK, audio examples get good from about 4.00 in, but it's worth watching
the whole thing: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lxeBrJP52vY
enjoy

Hey John,
"One More Time" by Daft Punk is an example that leaves no question about
the use of a heavily breathing (pumping) compressor. Pretty popular tune
too.
