Here is a link to Tiger Direct's website.
http://tinyurl.com/yno3y8

Asus A8N-SLI SE Socket 939 Barebone Kit / All-In-1 Inkjet Printer / AMD
Athlon X2 3800+ OEM / 250GB SATA HDD / 1GB DDR PC3200 / ATX Mid-Tower
Case with Clear Side / SLI 600 Watt Power Supply

$399 Tiger Direct

Seems like a ridiculously good deal. I have not been keeping up with
processors, but I finally have to upgrade so I'm checking this out.

I'll be running Cubase4 and Samplitude on it.

It's not latest/greatest PCIe board, but it's definitely upgradable. It's an
AGP/PCI based mobo with an NForce4 chipset. The chipset will be a problem if
you plan to use UAD-1 cards. The RAM is probably something you'll want to
upgrade to a pair of 1GB sticks if you plan to use it for audio. You should
be able to upgrade the CPU to an Opteron 185 (2.6GHz per core) and have a
nice machine to run a native system, or pull the CPU and load an AMD 64 3800
single core CPU to run it with Paris. If you like to overclock, the 3800 x 2
has a pretty good track record for some major MHz boosting.

Hmmmm......sorry......looks like this does have PCIe as well.

Nice looking system IMO.

Hey Deej,
The Opteron 185 slips into a 939 socket? I thought the
X2 4800 was the fastest CPU for that socket? Keep me
informed!

I'm loving my 939 with the AMD X2 4800 for Cubase.
I'm not tracking with it though. Just VSTi s and MIDI.

What is the problem with the NForce and UAD1? I've used earlier nForce
and UADs with no problem (but then I seem to have a magic touch with
computers and almost never run into compatibility issues). But if it is
not compatible then it's a deal breaker, 'cause I can't mix w/out my UADs.

If I had to upgrade the CPU then it's not really a great deal. As it is,
it will certainly be much faster than the 2.1 Athlon XP (don't laugh)
I'm using now. I figured I would add another gig of Ram and more drives,
etc.

It's the NForce4 chipset. NForce3 works great. NForce4 .not so. Chris Ludwig
will know more about this than I.

Thanks, Deej. You saved me from a painful time-waster. They list jerky
audio and CPU spikes on the UAD site with NFORCE 3 & 4 chips and dual
core AMD cpu.

Such a sweet deal. Oh well. eBay here I come.

NForce 3 works great with UAD-1 cards. I'm using a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra
939 right now with 4 x UAD-1's in a Magma. Rock solid. The GA-K8NS-939 works
well too. Highly recommended for UAD-1 cards. You don't need the"ultra". All
it provides is an extra LAN port and an extra SATA controller (which shares
IRQ with PCI slots that you will need for audio or DSP cards so it's
unusable on my system anyway.

HI Bill,
If you are using a UAD then you are SOL. The Nforce 4 in general has
some PCI bottlenecks in it from the PCI to PCI-e bridge design.
Also that bundle is gonna be loud if your using it for audio.

The Asus A8R-MVP is the only board that is fully compatible with UADs.
It has 3 pci slots and 2 open PCI-e and you can mix PCI and PCI UADs
on it.
Like all these board they won't be around much ;longer. All the FX/X2
and Opteron 100 series chips are compatible with it. I is not Vista
compatible if that matters to you. But the majority of the 939 will not
have Vista compatibility either.

Asus A8V and Giga GA-K8NS 939 are fully compatible as well. Are you talking
about mobos that are currently still being made? Shux, I'm so used to living
in retroland, I don't think much about buying something 2 years old...I
guess that's sorta' sad as well. UA better get up off their collective
hiney's PDQ and get something to market to address the situation.

What UA says is with dual core you cannot use 3 or 4

AMD Dual-Core CPU (Athlon X2/Opteron) with NVIDIA nForce4 / nForce3
based chipset

Symptom: Choppy Audio, CPU spiking.

* Systems may work fine with PCIe audio I/O device
(or FireWire device connected to PCIe>FireWire adapter)
* UAD-1 works via Magma expansion chassis
* Use Asus A8V series as a possible alternative (Via K8T800/K8T890
chipset)
* Issues do not exist with single core systems
* Issues do not exist with UAD-1e

AMD Dual Opteron / Dual-Core CPU (Athlon X2/Opteron) with NVIDIA nForce
Pro (2xxx-series) based chipset

Symptom: Choppy Audio, CPU spiking.

* Systems may work fine with PCIe audio I/O device
(or FireWire device connected to PCIe>FireWire adapter)
* UAD-1 works via Magma expansion chassis
* Use Tyan Thunder K8WE (S2895) as a possible alternative
* Issues do not exist with UAD-1e

HI Martin,
And probably a Nvidia chipset or Via chipset. The boards that have 3 rd
party chipset SATA , etc are the ones you normally need to check into to
make sure they will have vista driver.
Sense AsRock is ASUS it would make sense if they some form of Vista drivers.

This board has VIA and is also using SATA, although the boot up takes many

HI DJ,
Yes the boards that have popular chip sets on them are lucky enough to
have Vista compatibility.
The only compatible board still being made yes. Not sure why any
motherboard maker would make new board based on chipset s that are EOL.
The newer sockets and chip sets coming out for AMD stuff will have no
backwards compatibility. UADs issues with those chip sets are nothing
they can really do anything about. These are design flaws in the chip
sets themselves. We tried ages ago when we first ran across the issue to
find ways to make it work. There are also overall PCI performance issues
on the Via chipset also. The Nforce 3 board works great with a single
but with dual cores it's unpredictable. The Nforce 4 was pretty much
useless over all for most any PCI audio device. NVidia strayed quite
abit away from the PCI-e spec with the Nforce 4 so they could improve
video/gaming performance. Of course this the vast majority of users and
the Nforce 4 is an excellent gamer chip set.
The Nforce 3 chipset over all was better but dual-core support was not
optimized in them. This the case with the Opteron motherboards like the
Tyan 2885. With single cores the board work fine but with dual cores all
kinds of weird stuff happens. The S2895 works better but like the S2885
it still has issues because of the AMD 8131 chipset used on hte PCI-x
bus. The 8131 chipset had a bunch of design flaws and timing and buss
sensitive devices like the UAD and even the TC power core especially the
MK1 would suffer from abnormal cpus loads and drop outs. The 8132
chipset used on the Super Micro boards and the New Nvidia chi sets used
on the F series work fine. The current Intel chip sets work fine but
like AMD they do have to rely on the motherboard manufacturers to
properly lay out a board and not cut corners.

This is the direction I'm headed..probably starting next week. I gotta have
some more horsepower soon. Still, I'm pretty darned happy with the
UAD-1/Magma route. A 13 slot Magma has 4 slots (#''s 1, 5, 7 & 11 on the
newer boards with the round cable and slots # 1, 5, 8 & 12 on the older ones
with the flat 80 pin ribbon cable) that will all share a single IRQ and if
inserted in a mobo PCI slot that doesn't share IRQ with the AGP (or whatever
other show stopper), they will function as a single PCI card on one
driver/IRQ. I'm using two of the newer model 13 slot Magmas with 4 x UAD-1
cards in one and 3 x RME HDSP cards in the other. It's the most rock solid
DAW I've ever built. I have also used a newer and older 13 slot Magma in
this same scenario and they worked great together. Hope the Tyan S2915 will
be the same. It won't be long until I start building this beast. I'm looking
for deals on Socket F Opteron 2220's (2.8GHz per core) right now. They are
quite a bit more than the 2218's (2.6GHz per core). A pair of 2218's can be
had these days for around $575.00, and it looks like prices are starting to
drop.

It seems that the "good old days" are coming back, when there was time to
make coffee while the computer started up;-)
