I just recieved some files to play on from a client. They are #$#@%$&^$#!!!
m4a files. So far I haven't been able to convert them to wave or mp3 files.
Up till now I've been using the handy dandy CDex program to convert mp3's
to waves. Anyone know of a program that will do this??? My version of Wavelab
will only do mp3's and Cubase SX3 is the same. I just wasted a half hour
on idiottunes with no success. Any one know of something out there????? Bueller.....anyone?????

Yeh... My eval copy expired, but at least it won't set you back much
$$$. The only other method I've used is somehow realtime recording ITB
through sound forge from itunes.

I know it's not much, but I hate spending any when I've been doing great with
CDex for the mp3 thing from clients. Now since Apple has come with this
new format for their copy protection scheme....I may have to spend some money
that I wouldn't have to otherwise. IT JUST CHAPS ME!!!! (what's that mean
anyway???? it sounds right though) ;-)

This comes down to the client not having a clue about what MP4a really is,
and writing to the wrong format. Educate yourself and then educate them, I
say :)

DVD John, the guy who cracked the CSS DRM on DVDs also cracked the Apple DRM.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/01/05/itunes_drm_cracked_w ide_open/
He also cracked their streaming tech, bless his little Norwegian heart. Here's
a reportedly usable Windows app to do the conversion.
http://hymn-project.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1555
However, keep in mind you're probably violating an EULA, the DMCA, WTO regulations,
as well as helping to hasten the destruction of all good and decent copyright
holders and end the world as we know it.
As far as educating your clients, as AA suggested, I would go one step further.
They didn't give you the music in the wrong format, they are using the wrong
format to start with. A format that denies them rights they have every reason
to expect to have, including interoperability with other commonly used audio
software and devices.
TCB
P.S. I did a 'bake off' between Ogg Vorbis and MP3 at similar file size.
I had a friend do an impromptu A/B/Y test with multiple snippets from ten
different songs. I showed a slight preference for the .ogg files. Not much,
but it was there.

OK, guys -
m4a is NOT a proprietary standard. It is an open mpeg codec, like
mp3, but better. It is NOT something Apple came up with, like M$ did
with WMA.
The only time it is proprietary is if you buy protected songs from the
iTunes Music Store or someplace similar.
m4a or AAC files that you rip yourself, or that someone else rips
themselves, does not contain the Apple DRM. It is simply another
compressed audio format, like mp3 or OGG.
When the OGG zealots get on their soapbox, the same argument applies -
if you can't find a player to support it, what good is it?
But don't blast m4a all together because it is not, by itself,
DRM-locked.

Tom...I copied from a link that Brandon sent me. This is what I did.
"Install iTunes temporarily and don't burn a CD, but just right click on
the files and choose "Convert to MP3." For this to work, you need MP3 selected
as the importing filetype in Preferences."
I will add to that. You can't export the files, but just go to the itunes
folder on your hardrive and find them. I just did a search in windows. They
ended up being in an "unkown album" folder. Grab them from there. And, just
so you know, I wasn't yelling at you when you originaly responded to your
post
(I hope it didn't look that way) it was just my frustration with loosing
an hour or whatever trying to figure it out, plus the frustration that I
might have to start dealing with these friggen files more as people start
using them as their default "quickie send to Rod on the internet" file.

Rod,
No harm done. I found that technique too but it only works with tunes
not purchased from itunes. I guess I'll still be burning discs for =
those
unless I buy another program.
