I was pondering trying to use the VC1's compressor section only while usig
a different mic pre.
has anyone tried this?
If so, how did it work out?

It will work fine. I have done this with various preamps. It works nicely
for pumping up preamps that are neutral sounding and/or pres don't have a
lot of output gain (gives a whole new attitude to a Mackie VLZ or a Great
River) Just set the VC1 to receive line input.

I am thinking of trying an BAE 312 into it for just a hint of compression.
Is there a balnced line input on the back? Or would I go XLR?
I can fool around and figure it out, but I have a rock vocal session today,
and I don't want to 'ice the kicker" fiddling around.

There are balanced line I/O on the back of the unit. They are XLR. This unit
is one of the true sleepers. Used to cost around $1k. Can be had cheap these
days (around $350.00) on EBay. It's got a nice vibe to it. I like the preamp
on acoustic guitar and it works nicely on the Neumann U87 for some reason.
It somehow deals nicely with the midrange honk of this mic in a way that
more expensive preamps don't. I think it's because of the elves.

im with DJ on this being a sleeper unit. I bought one
back in the 90's when they were new (cost about $950).
I had just received it when I was doing a Dirt Band record,
and put it right on Jimmy Ibbotson's vocal (with a U67).
I was just dialing in the levels when he asked me what I
was doing to his voice. I asked why, and he said it was
the best he had ever heard his voice back in the phones.
Needless to say, I taped down the knobs and off we went.

I still use it a lot on a mono smashed room mic, and with a lot
of electric guitars...
