Finally!!!.....something challenging for a change. I just got another mobo
in here that I've been waiting for that's a little heavier duty than the one
I was using for my slave system and so I'm getting ready to put the
finishing touches on this studio reconfiguration. I'll be finishing up my
set up a systemlink configuration across two, maybe three DAWs and I've got
this incredible digital patchbay here by Friendchip Audio (RMX32) with 48 x
AES channels (12 stereo I/O), 9 x S/Pdif coax channels (3 stereo coax I/O),
and 288 (18 I/O) x optical/ADAT channels. This will allow me to interpatch
across HDSP cards and integrate all of my outboard stuff, thereby working
around some routing limitations in Totalmix if using 3 x separate cards with
differeing I/O because this PB also serves as a format converter. I've been
having some issues with this patchbay getting it to respond to midi commands
so that it can be controlled by an applet in Windows. I think I have solved
this. I actually bought this right before I decided to sell my Paris
system. It's the perfect digital PB for larger systems. 24 bit through and
through with each I/O being buffered for clocking stability-will handle
sample rates of 96k for sure (and beyond, I think).
I'm not sure I'm going to need to keep this but it sure is cool. Redundant
as it may be.........I gotta' try it out at least for a while. If any of you
guys are running lots of DAWs, interpatching them digitally and need to be
able to do it quickly and easily, this will probably be the dream ticket.
Once I verify that it's working as it should be, I may want to sell it. If
anyone needs something like this, get in touch with me.

DJ, I don't know what the hell you're talking about but it sounds awesome.
I'd love to have a fraction of your digital audio and computer configuring
knowledge; I'd be dangerous. Right now I'm not really a threat to myself or
anyone else and I like it that way :-)

Rich,
The PB I'm using here has a control panel very similar to that of the RME
systemlink. The thing that makes it better is that it allows crosspatching
across multiple HDSP cards (there are similar limitations in Paris) and
integrating of all outboard gear with the I/O of any audio card across as
many computers as you've got audio cards. I've got 56 digital I/O on three
HDSP 9652's and another 18 on my Multiface spread over two computers. These
are limited to interpatching within the cards themselves in the RME
totalmix, though by physical routing, you can connect the I/O of the cards
themselves. Using this, it's like having all the cards in one computer. I've
also got a lot of outboard that connects digitally. This PB allows it all to
be routed any way I want in any format with the exception that this won't
convert ADAT format to 8 x AES or spdif I/O without an additional conversion
module. However, the optical patch points on this thing can pass either
s/pdif stereo or 8 x channel lightpipe. It's incredibly flexible.
I sorta' got into this stuff by accident when I was trying to figure out a
way to integrate Paris with the rest of the world. Sometimes I wish I'd have
held on to my Paris rig a while longer. This would have made things quite a
bit easier as far as integrating it with other gear (sigh....oh well)
