Logic????? [message #82867] |

So here I am, still trying to figure out if there's life (for me, that is)
after Paris, and I've been thinking, "well, if I'm a Mac dude, and if, maybe,
I'm gonna stay a Mac dude, then maybe I should think about Logic, since Apple
owns it, and should, theoretically, keep it current and competitive...".
And so I've been contemplating the Logic+Apogee Symphony package. Any thoughts?
Are any of you folks running real studio sessions on Logic systems? How
about latency? Track count? Native FX? UAD-1 FX? And most importantly
- how's it sound?

I was using Logic at the same time as Paris for years and finally now do pretty
much
everything in Logic. It's great to have accurate copying and pasting to different
bars
of music, it's great to use the latest UAD plugs etc. What made it more bearable
to
do sessions with talent present was getting a Mackie controller. I hear great
things
about the Symphony system and that its latency numbers are close to or as
good
as Paris. Logic sounds just fine to my ears. It almost never crashes (maybe
once a
year). Also it has plug-in delay compensation which is worth the price of
admission
right there. There's always issues and this is a good forum:

Just my opinions,

Works fine. You should be happy. I've seen big track counts working well.
Only thing I don't like is the tiny text they use in some places.

it works fine just not ogical at times until you get used to thinking
different. i would wait till 8.0 comes out cuz the dongel from 7 is
not suppose to work...or so goes the rumor...not sure if it'll be
mactel only either.

All of Apple's software is universal binary, (runs on both PPC and Intel
Macs) including Logic.
If the dongle changes (I doubt it would), then that would be part of the
upgrade. No worries. I wouldn't put much stock in rumors.

rumor or not, apple imo, will stop supporting the ppc platform in the
future. how near or far i don't know but i would say near would be a
closer time frame. time will tell.

Is it significant that no one has really talked about the sound? Is it "fine"
in the sense that I won't miss Paris? Or that I'll miss Paris a little,
but eventually I'll figure out how to make Logic sound great too? Or that
I''ll really miss Paris, but get over it, Paris is obsolete, it's time to
move on?

No I don't think it's too significant. Logic is like the other ITB solutions.
Nuendo, CuBase, DP, Samplitude (haven't used the latter) in terms of sound
quality. Clean and clear. General thinking with these now seems to be
"keep the track levels down" (-6 or so) so that buss overloads are avoided.
I like Logic's sound, but my preference is to bring an outside (analog) element
in
to the mix at some point - console, compressor, real tape or tape emulator
etc.
Right now Logic is considered a bit clunky, and it takes a while to learn
(Mac Pro Video is a good starting place), but its Virtual Instruments are
excellent, and it does a lot...
Hope this helps,
Ted

To be honest, I really like Logic's sound. It's full bodied and robust. Thick..
Not, plain like Sonar or transparent , like Nuendo, Cubase.
That's why I complain about Logic. With the proper updates 9New Mixer, New
editing, Graphics...Logic with 64 bit OS-xa and a 8 core Mac will be hard
to beat..

what ted said though logic may be a bit less cubeas/nuendo.pt in the
bright sound...kinda like paris. yes on watch your track levels going
to the master bus. the pan law setting on the free g plug will let
you set to -6db. virtual instruments aren't bad at all but i do like
the b4, korg and some other vsti's better on the pc going through the
lynx2 card.
big ditto on the learning curve though it's not as bad as it was on
the pre 7 versions. there's room for improvement but certainly
usable.

So, is Apple reasonably responsive to feedback from Logic users? Is there
reason to believe that future versions of Logic (or whatever it may be called
in future generations) will equal or even surpass the competition?

from what i've read on the logic forum
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=156
not like emagic use to be and at $200.00 a call to apple i doubt if
many do after the initial (free) period. like with any forum there
are a few resident...you know.
what is coming with 8???? apple will not give a clue so the rumor
mills from wherever are the only source of false hopes and dreams of
the future.
for midi stuff logic is excellent. i've had no serious problems with
audio other than a few minor bugs but they also seem to differ a bit
between the ppc's and the mactels. again nothing serious, just
annoying at times.
the biggest hurdle will be rethinking how you do some tasks that
you've done one way for years will now be different.

Heh, nicely vague Rick. :^)
No worries, Apple has a history of supporting past systems for years.
By the time they no longer support universal binary updated versions
that run on PPC, most people will have likely updated their systems for
other reasons. And the universal binary version before that will still
work fine if there's anyone who hasn't.
Cheers,
