I've been developing a bit of tinnitus. It's really aggravating. I'm in the
middle of a remix and new tracking project. I've been doing some research
on this condition and it can be partly due to stress......something I've
had more than my share of recently.

Anyway, I'm going to an audiologist soon and will be doing what I can to
start trying to mitigate this but in the meantime, I'm still trying to get
some "things audio" accomplished.

Here's a mix that "I think" is close. Any commntes, critiques, references
to appropriate areas of suckage, etc. would be much appreciated.

.......and BTW, I apologize for this not having anything at all to do with
politics

There's somethin' funky on the bass that's making it warble a bit, and just
a bit too much in the finger/mid sound.... sounds like a compression issue.
Possibly attack/release timing, too much X:1 or threshold... not sure what's
going on there exactly. It may be a bit too loud also, however temper that
with some new compression settings. Vocal is too low in volume overall.
Snare isn't quite as snappy as I personally like, might be too washed in
verb (seems kinda 'soft' in the mix like too much room/not enough dry).
Reminds me of a Dan Fogelberg vibe, nice.

Hey, that's purty. Is it yours? I agree that the vocals are bit too far
back. I'd punch up the drums a bit and brighten up the acoustic guitar some
if it was me. But the only thing that really kind of bugged me was the
violin . . . seemed sorta mid-rangey and uneven, and maybe just too loud at
times. And maybe panned too far.

Tinnitus . . . medications are a common cause. A lot of different meds have
this as a possible side effect. I had to quit using aspirin for this very
reason.

Hi Deej-

The only thing I would say is the main vox could have a bit more
focus. I think I would like to hear it a bit thicker - more
of the lower mids, similar to the fiddle. Doing this might
mean adjusting the fiddle of course, which I like as is. I
don't mind the fiddle's levels bouncing a bit, seems to fit
the feel of this music, more live and immediate. This is all
taste, of course.

More people than you know have tinnitus. An audiologist friend
explained it as the brain substituting signal that it thinks
should be there that isn't. He successfully treats it with a
listening regimen lasting many weeks of decreasing levels of
white noise while sleeping.

Thanks Sarah,

I know the singer will agree with you. The first think he's going to say
is "more me" :o)

there are two acoustic guitars in this song. I'm going to do a bit of tweaking
on them both.

Deej, I have tinnitus and have for many years. I have a couple tricks.
Once you have the frequencies and dbs you are losing identified by the
audiologist, you can set up an EQ on the output of Cubase that you can
switch on for mixing. Use a really transparent EQ, duh. For an instant
treble boost, cup your hands behind your ears, catching more of the high
freq content. This is not accurate by any means but it can help a little
to hear a shaker or hihat better.

Next, stop listening really loud and use cans when you are around drums
or loud amps. I seem to have noticed that when I eat a lot of sugar it
gets worse. That is probably the candida kicking in.

Hi Bill-

Marshall Chasin up here in Toronto. He works with John Chong.
Together they head up Musician's Clinics of Canada.

http://www.musiciansclinics.com/home.asp

They're quite good, and a who's who of Performing artists credit
them with reviving/prolonging/saving performing careers. I only
know Marshall through my connection with John. He has worked with a number
of my performing piano clients, and also with my
wife, who is an Illustrator. He's quite brilliant and equally eccentric.

Highly recommended

Ted

Hey Deej, how are you? It's been a minute since we last communicated. Hope
all is well on your end. I Enjoyed the song quite a bit. I don't think my
comments are much different than those already offered, just wanted to say
good work...keep it up!

Hey Deej - I was doing some research into the ESP chip, and as it happens,
John Dattorro (one of the original creators of the ESP chip in PARIS, and
from the looks of his achievements a mind-boggling digital audio genius
whose bio I'll get up on the Wiki ASAP) has some interesting things to say
about tinnitus. Don't know if it will help, but as soon as I stumbled across
it I wanted to post it here ASAP.
