Hello again. I think I've finally solved my computer problems. Two
questions:

1. How did you create that default project file with external clocking? I
feel retarded...

2. General question: I have a damaged XP installation on another hard drive
with some files I wouldn't mind recovering. Nothing too critical, but I'd
like to retrieve them before attempting to repair that XP installation.
However, it seems that the XP code still has administrative control over
those files. How can I get past this hurdle?

Hope everyone has been well.

Easiest way I can think of is to purchase a USB hard drive enclosure for
it... pop it in a USB slot and presto!
I think that is what you meant? When you say XP holds control over those
files... I assume that is only when the XP is running. Kinda impossible to
hold control over the files if it isn't running...

Not neccesarily so if you set the permissions as such manually. Buy a USB
removable drive case as Ed says, load it with the damaged drive, plug in the
usb cable, and then...What you will have to do is take ownership, you can
hit the KB (knowledge base) at support.microsoft.com for further details on
that.

So this shouldn't be a big deal, then?

Why USB and not as a slave on the primary IDE bus? Just wondering...

Thanks, fellas. I don't know what I'll do when this little community is
gone.

I had already tried it via the slave slot on the (removable) primary IDE
bus.

Yeah, the problem is that XP might not know 'which' xp to boot. So you want
to be booted and in the OS before you fire up that drive... thus, USB is the
way to go since you can't hot swap IDE.

First of all, it is a requirement to *be* retarded to do this so *feeling*
retarded is probably a good start. The next step would be to find a way to
DL all of the Vonage commercials and play them nonstop for three days
whil'st meditating on picture of the Dalai Llama in a chicken suit. This
should create the headspace to move on to the next steps, which are:

1. Back up your Paris .cfg file.
2. Edit the .cfg file with the following line: UsehouseSync=1
3. Save and close the .cfg. file and reboot the computer
4. Open Paris from the Paris.exe file which lives in the C>Program
Files>EMU>Paris folder
5. Set the sample rate to 48KHZ
6. Save this project to the C>Program Files>EMU>Paris folder under the name
"default project" (quotes are mine-don't use)
7. Save the same project again under the exact same name to your
desktop-this will be the one you use to open Paris, the one that is saved in
the EMY folder is in case this one gets corrupted)
8. Close Paris and turn your computer off.
9. Set your house clock to either 44.1 or 48k
10. Power on any equipment that will be syncing to the MEC digital ports,
boot the computer and launch Paris.
11. Flap your arms and cluck like a chicken.

Hey Jimmy..........the correct command line for the Paris .cfg file is:

UseHouseSync=1

I didn't capitalize the "h" in House below. this needs to be done.

Here is a tidbit from BT back in 2004...... let the magic be new all over
again :)
-------------------------------------------------

I currently have 8 EDS cards, 4 MECs, 4 C16s, 7 Analog Input cards, 4
Analog output cards and 7 ADAT cards running under XP. At one point
during testing, I hooked up 6 loaded MECs and dropped 96 tracks in
simultaneous Record. I would bet 96 tracks in Record is a record for a
DAW (no pun intended).

I wish I could tell you why it seems to like me so well, but I don't
know. Other than making sure you are patched correctly in the Paris
patchbay and making sure the correct Input card is selected in the 2nd
MEC's "MEC Modules" block, I would expect it to be a Word Clock issue.

You are using WC, right? Besides the "UseHouseSync=1" line, you MUST
create a "Default Project" in your Paris Pro folder, and the "Default
Project" MUST be set to Word Clock sync and it MUST be set to a 48K
sample rate. Even if you have your Word Clock generator set to 44.1K and
are going to work at 44.1K, the Paris Default Project MUST be set to 48K
in the Project Window when Paris boots up. After bootup, you can change
it to read 44.1K with no problems. This one nearly killed me and Chris
Thoman till we caught it.

Do this. Patch some Paris audio on your 2nd EDS card (B) to play out of
MEC 2. As in, in the Paris patchbay, patch Mixer 2 stereo outs to the
MEC 2 headphone outputs, for instance. Make sure the stereo meters on
Mixer 2 are showing audio. If you hear audio, the MEC and WC is fine,
and you have a Patchbay issue, some bad hardware, or some peculiarity of
Paris on XP that is unknown.

But my bet is that you will not hear audio play back out of MEC 2. If
that's the case, then you have a Word Clock issue that is either in the
Paris.cfg file, or the Default Project. As soon as you hear audio
playback, your inputs will work. Patience, Spockish logic and staying
methodical is your best bet.

Regards,
Brian T
