OK guys, saw a STAGGERINGLY good band last night, Band of Horses. Two of the
three(!) guitarists used Fender 8x10 cabs. I'm probably not going to shell
out for that, but I've been thinking of running one of my 1x12 combox with
a 10" speaker. Any strong opinions on great sounding 2x10 or 4x10 cabs and/or
speakers to put in them? We're looking for clean to moderately gritty, no
Linkin Park crunch here.
Thanks,
TCB
P.S. Neil, that Baby Bottle you sold me sounds damn fine on a Fender Deluxe.

I've become a 12" speaker guy in my old age but I used to swear by Vibrolux
and Super Reverbs. I recently subbed for a friend on a church worship band
gig thru a '80's Paul Rivera Concert amp w/ 2-10" speakers and it sounded
incredible.

Assuming you find a speaker you really like, one 10 will sound
different than 2 and a lot different than 4. I would go 4x10
as a minimum if you want to get close to what you heard.
10's are fast, punchy, and clear. I love 'em.
Here's some options:
http://www.eminence.com/guitar.asp?speaker_size=10
Fane went BK after a big flood and were bought by another
outfit and evidently will be back. These guys sell them:
http://www.loudspeakersplus.com/html/fane_10_12_guitar.html
Stay away from the alnico. Bought one. HATED it.
Several friends have told me that this guy has some of the best
speakers out there today. He has them custom made by Weber
and he also sells cabinets.
http://www.southbayampworks.com/speakers.html
there are a couple of 10's down the page a bit. His stuff is
all "vintage marshall greenback" style.
These may be the best out there:
http://www.tonetubby.com/specs10c8.htm
Hempcones.
The URL above is for the ceramic version.
They also offer alnico-magnet speakers. I like ceramic a lot
better, but the vintage guys like the way the alnicos crap out
when you push them (when alnico magnets get warm the
gauss goes down and they get weaker) Ceramic are clearer and cleaner and
don't wimp out after an hour of hard playing.
TT also offers their speakers in cabinets.
http://www.tonetubby.com/cabinet.htm
The 4x10 with ceramic is 945. Not cheap, but better than the
1300 or so for alnico.
This guy builds beautiful cabinets:
http://www.stoneagecustomcabinets.com
And of course, there is always Jensen and Celestion. I haven't
used either in a while so I can't comment

Two of the three singers in the Monx (one of them being me) are using the
BB for all of our lead vox. The third singer has a much thinner, reedier
voice and we still haven't settled on a mic for him yet. I'm not convinced
the BB is the right one for him, but we'll keep on looking.
I use really low wattage amps and don't use a ton of volume so I can throw
pretty much all of my mics on the amps I use. I've been having a ball moving
things around and trying all of the various combinations to get what I want
out of my amps. Guitars are probably the most fun for me to record because
the other guys are out of the room and I just set up the Langevin pre, put
all of the mics on stands and play around until I hear something I really
like. I'm so familiar with the was Cubase works that all of that is as transparent
as cellophane. The only danger is sometimes I screw around TOO much and don't
get enough done.

Thanks for the tips Neil. I think in this case the proximity with the Claytor
mic would be good. Trying to add a little body.
As I said in another post, sorry to lean on y'all.
Hope all is well,

Kewl - then if that's what you're going for, consider also
pairing it with a preamp that's a bit "slower", if you know
what I mean... that'll tend to emphasize the low-end harmonics
even more. Make it more "glue-y", so to speak. :) I don't
know which preamps you have so, I can't make a specific
recommendation, but I think you get the idea. Slower or perhaps
even "woolier" would be good.
>>As I said in another post, sorry to lean on y'all.
Why are you apologizing for that? That's the whole point of
this group!
Oh, and BTW, re: your mics... get some silica gel packets &
store your mics with one in each mic box. Under your conditions
as described, I'd probably use them for the dynamics, as well,
though normally you mainly have to worry about condensor mics
in that regard, it sounds like your practice/recording place
might be subject to some pretty harsh climatic shifts (i.e.
warm when you guys are in there, well below zero when you're
not). Taking your mics home like Tom suggested ain't a bad idea,
either, and would probably be my choice - heck, if you're
boxing them up each time, how hard is it to then toss the boxes
in a milk crate/bigger box/whatever?
And finally, if you EVER have to leave them set up on
stands 'til next session, stick a ziplock bag over the mic with
a silica gel pak taped to the inside of the bag, zip it almost
tightly closed around the mic or mic/mount/stand - IOW, enough
to keep dust out, but not keep all the humidity in; the gel pak
will take care of the rest.

I'll try everything but I'm leaning toward the Langevin dual vocal combo
that I have. In addition to sounding very good the comp seems to be very
nice for a few db of compression on the way to disk. I have a bunch of stuff
but I've been using pretty much that or the Syteks on everything.

Believe me, I wish I could. The problem is that in addition to playing in
this band, doing my own music, mixing for other people, DJ'ing, occasionally
getting eating and/or getting laid, I also work as an IT geek at the most
successful investments organization in the world. So if the mics are in my
house then whenever anyone else in the band wants to lay down so much as
a shaker I have to drive 25 minutes out there, wait, and then drive back.
No can do.
The silica gel packs are a good idea, thanks. The cabinet where the mics
are won't be freezing, it will just be cold. I told the guys who will be
using them when I'm not there to give them plenty of time to warm up before
starting. Because of the punk rock teenagers nothing is ever left out between
tracking sessions so there's usually a fair amount of time setting up stands/shock
mounts/amps and so on. I think that will usually be enough time to let everything
warm up.
Thanks again,
TCB

I guess that's opinion, and I'm into the brown sound thing, but what I heard
was this:
They're a little stiff at first, as most speakers tend to be, but once
loosened up properly they are warm and focused but not dry. I don't know how
they wear after a period of time, didn't buy in at the time I listened as I
wasn't doing the gtr gig/couldn't justify. They have more bottom than
celestion but aren't as fuzzy as say a Jensen horse shoe mag. Kinda reminded
me of an old set of Altec's I had once. I bet they'd rock in a JC120.
On a semi-related note, the best gtr cab I played through, probably ever,
for what I dig was an old 6x10 ampeg. focus focus focus perfect rock'n'roll
cab.. gtr player could kill himself and not slaughter the innocent on stage
or in the first row because the slant (what the hell is wrong with gtr
players that listen with it pointed at their pants legs, anyway?) allowed
him to hear perfectly w/o 120dB on the stage volume.

Man, I can't agree more. We push and stretch and complain about imaging and
the smallest of things when artists like Ella or Woody Herman had next to
nothing, and no overdub capability much less Autotune, digital reproduction
or even solid state. Guess it's just our nature as audio scientists, 'eh?
Times are good, and it's more on the artists at this point IMO.

Part of it is simply us aging. We only noticed fidelity if it was
really bad when we were teenagers because of the passionate
relationship we had with the music itself. Now that we are older,
we look to accuracy, clarity and fidelity to produce that same
response in us, but it never will.
I love having great tools, but that's all they are.
