I played with both in October when I bought my MBP. If you plan on
taking it anywhere, that 17" display is freakin' HUGE.
Too huge. Which is why I bought the 15". I have a 21" CRT on my main
G4 at home.
If it's going to spend most of it's life on a desk, then go for the
17". And pop the extra for the 7200rpm hard drive.

Good points, Paul.
The tempting thing about the 17 with the HD display is it might make a
useful focus monitor on HD shoots. Plus having full pixel res would be
great for location editing. And I'm spoiled by having that res on my
desktop system.
But you're right, it would be big thang to lug around for other laptop
work, and tougher to use on airplanes. Hmm, decisions, decisions.
I don't know if the 7200 rpm is really that much faster, BTW - if the
larger lower rotational speed drives use vertical data stacking or
whatever they call it, they might be just as fast or faster as the disk
fills up.
Cheers,
-Jamie

My laptop died last week and I got a replacement in store at Staples with my
warrany plan (pretty cool of them). It's newer, faster, stronger - typical 6
million dollar man stuff ;-) The previous was a 17" widescreen (so more like
16) but the new one has a little more compact case design and at 15" - I
much prefer smaller if I'm carrying it anywhere - esp. airports, etc. It
weighs about half of what the old one did (case design and power supply
mainly) and is much more fun to carry around and actually use.
I can see a 17 being a good choice for editing, but factor in all the other
gear you'll be lugging around with it. :-)

Congrats on the new box, Dedric!
My current G4 laptop is a 15" and you're right, that is a great size.
For Macs, the difference in weight is about a pound, from about 5 for
the 15" to about 6 for the 17".
I think I'll go to the Mac store and look at the displays. To see if the
Hi Def display is compelling when in a 17" form (my desktop puts the
same pixels in 24"), and to see if the 15" LED display has any color
reproduction advantages or disadvantages. And pick 'em up, see how they
feel.
I think I'd be happy with either box. They are both a huge leap up from
the G4 laptop, and as good or maybe faster than my speedy dual G5.
Sweeeet!
Cheers,
-Jamie

I know that when I replaced the 5400 in my PIII IBM Thinkpad with a
7200rpm drive, it was like getting a new processor.
Also, while it's completely a personal thing, I wouldn't bother with
the glossy screen. Yes, you ultimately get a sharper image and more
saturated colors. But you also get reflections from freakin'
EVERYTHING around and behind you, and that distracts completely from
the prettier image on the screen. I opted for the matte screen after
seeing them side-by-side in the Apple Store, and don't regret it.

bigger screen also means less battery life. But I'm a techno-ho. I'd
probably get the bigger screen :)

I think I'll stick with a matte screen also. I like the one on my G4.
I'll check out the specs on the hard drive options, thanks for your
feedback on that!

Had a similar experience with my tablet PC, however to be fair I ripped any
non-essential-to-recording software off of it straight away. The difference
was 'not' small in my case.

Agree again. I have 3 laptops. The glossy screens make me crazy with
reflections of whatever is behind me. Ditto that on any analog CRTs w/o a
coating on it. Flat panels ROCK. My tablet, with it's touch screen grid,
ROCKS. Not so much on the glossy with the rocking. Glossy is real cool for
night time DVD watching... anything else about it annoys my eyes.
FWIW.

I was wrong, the 17" is closer to 7 pounds. Here are the full specs:
