I've been hanging out on the AMDZone today trying to educate myself a bit.

In researching the Tyan S2915 mobo, I ran across this thread
http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=87410

and I also ran across this:

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Berlind/?p=366

What I'm wondering is if this mobo will be quad core compatible and what is
the most powerful CPU it will currently allow.

Opterons are very confusing...there are so many of them by so many different
names.

Lots of interesting stuff on AMDZone disputing claims by Intel of superior
performance. Lots of it looks credible too.

If you're interested, check my last post on the "I want to get 64bit/Vista
ready" thread for some more info on the digging I've been doing on a new
native DAW.

Just ran across this. Very interesting stuff.
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=o2000&pag e=1

In the multimedia test, Intel kicks the Opterons' collective butt
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=o2000&pag e=6
...................but how does this correlate to DAW functionality?

I'm wondering though if the benchmarks that would translate best for DAW use
aren't more along the lines of the memory bandwth and the Apache tests that
simulate requests p/s processed, and max data transfer rate.
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=o2000&pag e=8

In the case of memory bandwidth, AMD has the edge and as far as requests p/s
and max data transfer, they are about even.

Hmmmmmm.........enought of this...my head hurts.

LEGIT REVIEWS TESTED AMD's answer to Intel's Conroe offensive. With the
latest price cuts of AMD CPUs, it was interesting to see whether an X2
5600+, a sub-$200 CPU fare with Intel's own E6300, which fits nicely into
the same category. When testing in real world games, a surprise happened in
S.T.A.L.K.E.R., where Intel took a beating. AMD took the lead in Doom 3 as
well, while Quake 4 returned point for Intel. However, AMD demolished Intel
in Serious Sam 2. Head over there and read a highly surprising review. But
to see almost 50% faster frame rate in Serious Sam... even worse than Athlon
64 vs. Intel Pentium 4 in Unreal Tournament 2k4.

Now maybe things get interesting...

....but I remember Chris Ludwig was not impressed with AM2 early on.

El Miguel

My crystal ball tells me that the system that is pictured here is in my
future. I will be starting with the motherboard with two of the Santa Rosa
dual core CPU's for now. This motherboard looks to me to be a true monster
as far as bandwidth and options/expandability are concerned. I just want to
be able to do modest track count projects at low latency without ASIO direct
monitoring. On the Nuendo forum, the AMD systems seem to be consistently
robust and trouble free if paired with the right hardware and I think I've
got the right hardware as far as having all my PCI cards in Magmas that can
accommodate PCIe host cards if need be. I don't really care if this system
is faster than a XEON Woodcrest system, as long as it get's the job done for
me for the next couple of years. At that point it's gonna be a whole new
world.

Also, check this out RE: Barcelonas........
http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2939

Looks like they will be a significant improvement over the existing AMD dual
cores and may keep pace with the Woodcrest XEONs, though from what I'm
reading out there, AMD is gonna need to pull a rabbit out of it's hat after
that with Intel moving to 40x nm technology. AMD's purchase of ATI may be
the ticket to keeping them alive though and as long as they stay with the
Socket F ZIF , my mobo should (hopeful) remain viable, at least for a while.
