My 12 year old daughter has been plugging away on a beat up old Yamaha and
I'm looking to get her something new in the $200 or less price range

Unless it is ugly and that turns her off (which is perfectly valid) does the
Yamaha sound OK? One thing I think is important for a beginner is to have an
instrument that is set up really well so it is easy to fret and does not
hurt to play. A lot of new instruments in that price range will not play
well, so if the Yammy is potentially OK, I would spend $50 on getting it set
up really nicely. instead.

I'll be looking into it this week...basically the action is really high so I
don't know what can be done to it...our local repair guy will be able to
answer that for sure

Don-

Do you have a friend who's a good guitar player? If you know one, ask if
they'll go with you to a store with lots of used guitars, and have them try
'em out and see if there's a good cheap one. There's often one good cheap
one. If not, well, you haven't lost anything but some time, and perhaps you'll
pick up some pointers.

If you find one, have your daughter try it. If it makes her want to play
and it's easy to play and sounds good, you've got a winner.

I haven't bought a new guitar since 1971. (And that one turned out to be
a lemon...)

Hey Don,

Have you checked out the Baby Taylor or the stuff from Daisy Rock yet?

Glad to hear there's another musician coming up. My 15 year old daughter
plays electric and upright bass and is just starting trumpet. My 12 year
old son plays guitar and trombone.

I played the Baby and it's a great guitar for the money.

Hope this helps!

Mark

Don, check out Seagull guitars...a few stores in Ottawa carry them...Metro
Music being the place I'd recommend. Best to play them all though, since
they all sound (and are set-up) a little different. But, they're solid top
guitars, and sound a whole lot better than you'd expect for the price.

Big thing to consider though is instrument size...a full size drednaught
gtr might be too big for your daughter right now. Nut width will be a big
factor too. Maybe the baby taylor would be a better fit. It'd certainly be
worth her trying it to have something to compare against. I think Steve's
has one...I think they carry Seagull too.

Cheers,

Kris

Seagulls are nice, just check them closely as some are not. Great price
though.

Not sure where they come in price-wise, but the Tanglewood brand
guitars are a decent offshore guitar being distributed by a Canadian
company.

You'll probably find them at Steves or L&M.

David.
