OK, well, nothing like being able to plan ahead. Sheesh...

So, there's this live show, see? It's THIS Sunday, see? And I've got a
piano, a cello, a soprano singer, and either a flute or a clarinet
(depending upon which piece they're playing) to record and put into a PA...!

What microphones should I look at begging, borrowing, or buying to use
in this situation? (All I have right now are a couple MXL 603S Mogamis
and an SM57 Beta...)

Thanks for any suggestions!

Doug

Just trying to think of what might be common/easy to find at
short notice, and not overly expensive if you have to buy:

Piano: Couple of AKG 414's of any stripe, or BLUE Bluebirds @
the G.C. there in yer town.

Cello: RE-20, Senn 421, or TLM-103

Soprano: Shit, no telling - when it comes to live, voice is the
hardest & easiest at the same time, ya know? A regular or Beta
58 might be fine, but see if you can also get ahold of a Senn
441 or any of the higher-end stage condensers that won't be
obtrusive & in her face like a big studio mic would be.

Flute/Clari: Any decent cardioid LDC, really, would probably
work in this situation... it's more about positioning, IMO.
Something like an AT4040 might be nice for this - pretty
smooth, not too overly bright, obtainable/not very obscure or
hard to find.

Good luck!

Beyer M500 Ribbon mics are great for women's vocals. I've also used them on
my cello (as well as the Beyer M160) but because of prox. effect you have
to wipe out the low end EQ if you're close micing (especially on the 160)--
but those ribbons sound warm & wonderful (I just had a couple re-ribboned
by Steve Sank--nice!)

Well..sigh...you'd think I could find more than just a few MXL mics in a
county of almost a million people...

Finally found a Rode NT3, a matched pair of NT5's and an AT 4031. What do
y'all think about them? Should I try to have somebody overnight me
something?

Doug (Might head to Phoenix to cruise the shops there tomorrow...)

OK, quick follow up... Tomorrow is the day!

I picked up a Sennheiser 421, which will serve dual duty of being my new
voice-over mic after I use it on the cello.

I also got an AT4033 that I'll use with an MXL V69 Mogami for the
vocalist and the flute and clarinet. Hopefully we'll have time for a
good sound check to figure out which way to go. I'm hoping to use this
one on the frame drums, the udus and other noisemakers in the studio
after using it for this gig.

I've got a couple MXL 603s Mogamis that I'm going to try on the piano -
almost wishing that I had picked up that matched pair of NT5's for $330
today, but oh well...

I stopped by the GC and they did indeed have the Bluebird, but I
couldn't justify spending the money for two of them. How are those
things on vocals anyway? I can probably rationalize the money for one
of them...

Doug (wish I had the money to buy one of everything!)

Doug - the Bluebird is a great mic for vocals - both male and female.
Definitely give it a try and see what you think if you have a chance.
