Hey Aaron, My MOBO is Socket 478 P4. I don't think it will take a Xeon, or
will it?

Here are the specs again:

Some of the Celeron and the last Pentium 3 processors use motherboards that
have the Flip Chip - Pin Grid Array or FC - PGA socket. - This is not a new
socket, just a new name for Socket 370.

However, Socket 370 is now dead. The Celeron and Celeron D (not a dual-core)
processors do not use Socket 370 or Socket 478 motherboards, they use the
same LGA775 socket as Pentium D (dual-core) and Pentium 4 processors, both
of which have been superceded.

Intel Pentium 4 processors (superceded) use the earlier Socket 423 and
Socket 478, or the current Socket LGA775 motherboards, which run the latest
Intel Core 2 Duo (dual-core processors) and Intel Core Quad (quad-core
processors).

No, it's not the same. This kind of upgrade would be more for someone that
already has this type of mobo, IMO or knows where to get one.

That's kind of a loaded question. I'd say start by looking over reviews at
Tom's Hardware to see what was recommended in the past, sifting out the nut
case crowd (IE, no overclocking/how far can I push it types). It's entirely
possible that you can't find a mobo for it, which is more or less why I said
upgrade instead of new rig. I see this as more of an upgrade to someone
that already has a compatible motherboard.

I'd say the standard for this era CPU are going to be 5 PCI slots, onboard
USB and stick to name brands like Asus, Abit or Gigabyte. Use Intel chipset
for the motherboard. This is a socket 370, also known as a flip chip also
known as FCPGA (Flip Chip - Pin Grid Array). That is the CPU socket you're
looking for in the bargain bins for mother boards.

Hopefully that helps clear up some things?

Hi Aaron,
That series of Xeons didn't work on standard single CPU mobos.
They also so ran very very very hot like all the older net burst based Intel chips did.

In the time period of that CPU AMD was/is a far better choice imho.
Of course like the p4 /Xeon CPUs they are all discontinued as well as the motherboards for them.

A NForce 3 chip set based AMD motherboard from Gigabyte or ASUS were I think the best option going back in that time.

I have a morbid curiosity to try Paris on a current motherboard but don't have access to the hardware anymore.

Meaning that if someone found a system to lend you, you'd try?

I'd be intensely and immensely interested in the results of such an experiment!

Hi Kerry,
Yes.
Mainly to see if the hardware will work on current hardware. \
With it getting harder and harder to find old PC motherboards, CPUs and such I think it would be a good thing test.
I'm already working on getting a basic 1 card 442 setup to do a test with.
If that is successful then then it will be worth pursuing the multi-card setups.

The multi-card setups would probably only be useful in a Magma chassis though sense newer motherboards will only have 2 or 3 PCI slots at best.
