Tomshardware confirms the rumors we've been hearing whispered by those with
access. Intel is cooking up some serious stuff.

HI,
Yes and we should see them hitting market by the end of the year.
WE are hopefully getting our first samples in the next 3 or 4 weeks I hope.

So will there be dual socket mobo's that will accept quadcore CPU's? I need
this and if I don't have it I will die.

You seemed to be in danger of death earlier when you spoke of not having
access to your UAD-1 Neve EQ. You walk a thin line, and I salute you.

That would be four cores on one die. In theory that could mean eight cores
on one mobo, but I don't know for sure if Intel is going to do that on workstation
class machines.

The big news, though, is that for highly mulitthreaded apps this will make
a _real_ difference. When did I start talking about mulitthreading in audio
apps? Oh, when I still wrote for xlr8your mac or something, right? And some
forward looking coders really put effort into that, and a lot of them gave
up the fight and run servers now. Too bad . . .

If they don't do this they are just a bunch of pussies.

I remember a lot of fantisizing about this back in '99. I think you might
have been involved in a big theoretical discussion involving BT, SSC,
Edmund, etc. We still had a living DAW. Those were the days. (sigh)

The majority of the current Xeon wood crest motherboards out right now
will except 2x quad core Xeons when they are released. You should only
need a BIOS upgrade.
That said don't expect mainly applications to take advantage of it. Most
all audio/video applications will only use 4 cores at most. There are
still many programs that still don't use more than one. Oh and don't
forget that most all new motherboard will only have 2 PCI slots at best.
The ones coming out in the beginning of next year will have 1 PCI slot
maybe. Some Xeon server boards will PCI-X slot still but the number of
them will still decrease.

We’ve been talking about this here for many years. It’s about time the hardware
manufacturers caught up to the Paris users group.
