Ted, you probably already know this, but since the consequences of getting this wrong are so potentially disastrous (I got bitten badly by this once "back in the day"), I'll say it anyway for the benefit of others.
This only applies to creating PC formatted disks from the Mac - you're safe if you're staying with Mac format archives, and using something like MacDrive to read those disks on PC. But if you're transferring your PPJs and PAFs from Mac OS9 to PC via a PC formatted disk, all I can say is if you once let the names get stripped down to 8.3 names, the damage has been done. The original name info becomes irrecoverable and even Mac versions of PARIS won't be able to read it any more. The audio filenames themselves will have been changed and your PPJs will lose their grasp of what files belong to them and what audio goes where.
The only thing you can do at that point is to tediously manually re-associate the PPJ's audio with the renamed PAFs, which can range from "an easy two minutes" to "practically impossible".
So Mac PARIS users: make certain this is addressed before you archive and delete originals - there's no going back. Or (safer) - stick with Mac format archives and use MacDrive.

If I'm not mistaken, on the PC side you can only work with 24 bit files on the playing field if they're PAFs. Any other 24 bit files it can handle (WAV or SD2) are auto converted into PAF before they can be used.
