Just stumbled upon this user group; had no idea it still existed.
Anyway, I need some advice regarding configuration settings for running Paris
3.0 (single card) on an Apple G4 Ethernet dual processor running OS 9.2.
(And please forgive me for sounding ignorant because I am.)
Lately, depending on the project, I’ve gotten memory warnings when saving.
To work around it, I just cleared the Undo buffer within the project and
kept working.
Today I decided to try to optimize my settings. I referred to an old user
group posting that recommended the following and made these changes.
BEFORE AFTER
Disk I/O 64 128
Disk Cache 10 80*
Overview Cache 2048 4000
Manual Punch Short Long
The Paris manual says that Minimum and Preferred Memory Settings for Paris
be increased by 1200k for every MB that the Disk Cache is increased. Since
I had increased the Disk Cache from 10 to 80MB (an increase of 70MB) that
meant 1200k x 70 = 84000k. But rather than adding that to my previous minimum
and preferred settings of 62998, I added it to the recommended minimum and
preferred settings of 5098 and ended up at 89098 for both minimum and preferred,
i.e.
BEFORE AFTER
Minimum 62988 89098
Preferred 62988 89098
Now the bad news: After closing Paris and restarting, I can’t get Paris to
open. Instead, I get a warning saying there’s insufficient memory and that
clearing the Undo buffer might help. Of course, because Paris doesn’t open
I can’t unclear the Undo buffer. And because Paris isn’t opening, I can’t
revert or tweak Paris’ Disk I/O, Disk Cache, and Overview Cache settings,
either.
I tried enlarging the Minimum and Preferred settings—that didn’t help. I
tried setting my Mac’s Memory Control Panel to its largest size (32736k).
I restarted after each adjustment, but neither one helped. Paris still won’t
open.
Does anyone know what I should try next? Is there a way to get into the Paris
configuration settings when Paris is not opening?
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. (And please don’t tell me I’m an
idiot—I’m already fully aware of that.)
Many thanks,
Richard

This is Richard with additional info: Just read this in the Paris manual:
"Warning: Don’t set the Disk Cache too high. If you set it higher than the
available amount of memory in your computer, PARIS won’t boot! (The .cfg
file will most likely need to be replaced if you do this.)
So perhaps this means that my real question is, "How do you replace the .cfg
file?" There's nothing in the manual about it.
I also have this old post that says, "If you are not able to open PARIS and
need to change the Configuration settings to get Paris to work, use BBEdit
Lite (available on the net for free) to open the PARIS.cfg file. Make a backup
of the PARIS.cfg file before you open it. You can change all these settings
in there, and they're clearly labeled and you don't have to start up PARIS
to change the settings. Just keep the original text and change the numbers,
save the file and start up PARIS." However, I can't find a free download
of BBEdit Lite 4.6 on the Internet, perhaps because it's so old now. So another
question: Does anyone have a copy of BBEdit Lite 4.6 that they could send
me?

another few seconds at google. It's not that hard, really... but I don't own
a mac so I'm not doing the research for it to be honest :)
