In my quest for ways to increase my earning potential (and to stay in the
recording business!) a friend suggested that I look into becoming an audio
forensics dude. Do any of you folks have experience, strength and/or hope
to share? He pointed me in the direction of these guys:

They make software that is supposed to be comparable to the mega-buck software
that the big kids (whoever they are!) use and they also offer training in
using their system. Unfortunately it's PC only, but we have an HP laptop
that I could use w/ Windows XP-Pro and I have a MOTU 828 MK. II, which might
work...
Any thoughts?

Isn't that a competitor to Intelligent Devices' "Speech Extraction System"?

The very first thing I did when I began researching this stuff was to email
ID to ask about their law enforcement software. I got no response.

I would give Edmund a call and see if you can catch him personally. I
haven't talked to him since SSC passed, but I meant to get in touch
and see if there were any opportunities at ID for trainers. Steve was
doing a good bit of that before his accident, so there might be
something there for you if you were interested.

Hey Gantt,
I know someone in town here that has made a LOT of money doing this over
the years with simple tools like Soundesigner, DNR and ProTools. It
took him quite a while to be recognized as an "audio expert". As the
person processing the files, you will be called upon to testify to your
work and results. You will also be grilled by opposing council who will
try to discredit you, and will have their own experts to counter your
findings. It took my acquaintance several years before he was actually
accepted at face value (mostly because by that time, he had already
worked for many of the lawyers!). Be prepared to read books on being a
professional witness (yes, they do have them) and have a lengthy list of
audio engineering clients and references...

He actually was working on those and told me that the infamous
gap was certainly intentional erasure. From the depth of erasure, he
thought it had been erased many times... He still thought something
might be extracted at some point though.
I wish he was still on it, huh?
