Okay, i want to stick with PARIS. but my ancient beige G3
just won't recognize my extra internal hard drive anymore and
my external cd burner is very erractic.
there is only a SCSI port on the mac.
could i buy a new mac and find drivers to run paris 2.1?
i assume if i could, i would have access to firewire and some way
to recover my audio files to the latest mac OS.

Correction, Paris will run on G4 duals, including the 1.25GHz dual. However,
the dual machines are a waste of money because Paris will not utilize the
second processor, also they run hotter and louder! Paris and OS 9 will not
run on the G4 FireWire 800 machine, the vary last G4 tower made.
You can pick up a G4 400 to 500 MHz machine for under $100.00, check ebay
or Craig's list. Paris will run fine on one of these machines. If you want
to run a bunch of plugins these machines can be upgraded with faster G4 processors.
OWC is one source for up grades.
You can also run Mac OSX on these machines on separate partitions or separate
drives. OSX will run better with a faster processor, and you can add a pioneer
DVD burner and utilize Apple's video and DVD authoring software. The other
advantage to having a dual boot Mac is, you can run the latest greatest software
like Logic, DP, LIVE, Cubase, PT, etc. So for instance, if you wanted to
use mastering software, you could reboot in to OSX and open your Paris song
with mastering software in OSX.

One other thing! If you go with a G4 400 MHz+ make sure you get the AGP
version, not the PCI version.

If you're running plugins along with PARIS on OS9, the plugins should be
able to grab CPU cycles from a second processor, right?
And when running OSX for other applications, having a second processor
is very useful, almost double the processing power.

want to keep rolling with Paris on a Mac. I'm looking at plugins that cost
more.

let's see if i got it straight--
i should get a G4 400 to 500 MHZ,
AGP not PCI-- (i don't really understand this part)
pull out my PARIS card from my G3 and drop it into the G4,
and load my current operating system and go with that.
Will I need new drivers to run PARIS on the G4?
what's the best way then to add a CD burner to my new gear?
Any suggestions as to the model of the new burner?
Because the G3 had only a SCSI output, i've had trouble
finding a reliable CD burner. I've tried several and had
my old Yamaha reburbished and none have been reliable.
is there a way to retrieve my data from the internal
Maxtor drive that my present machine no longer recognizes?
This has been a baffling problem for me-- why the Maxtor
has gradually failed to show up and now finally is invisible to the G3.
will I be able to add either an internal or external additional
hard drive(say the Maxtor, which I don't believe is at fault)?

about what is obvious to a lot of you.

Hey JP! You can try to add the Mixture, but it might be shot. If not it
should work. You can also add hard drives up to 127 Gigabits. You can install
larger HDs but it will only see 127 GB.
You can do a search to find CD burners that will run on OS9. There are companies
on the net that have older Mac parts. You can also add a Pioneer CD/DVD
burner. I don't know for sure if the newer models will work with OS9, but
that shouldn't be too hard to find out.
You will not need any new drivers to run Paris on a G4. Just make sure you
get the original installer disc with the machine you buy. The transition
should be easy and it would be the cheap way to keep Paris going. Keep in
mind, you can get any Apple G4 tower to run Paris accept the last G4 FireWire
800 model. My suggestion for the 400/500 MHz model is because they are so
cheap. You can get a much faster model if you want. Faster is always better.
The AGP is for the video card only. The earlier model 400/500MHz are PCI
only and I think have slower bussing or something. Most 400/500 MHz machines
you will find are going to be AGP, but you should make sure. It's also a
bit easier to find AGP video cards if you ever have to replace it. You can
go look at all the specs for all models at www.apple-history.com, go to the
left hand column.

I might've missed it... but did you try to replace the ribbon cable to your
hard drive before you go to all this trouble over it losing the maxtor?

Hi AA--
actually i tried switching the boot drive to the maxtor's
postion and vice versa. G3 still wouldn't recognize the maxtor
but had no trouble starting otherwise. of course, the maxtor
itself could be the culprit.

Was the Maxtor a boot able drive? If so, see if you can go under "Start up
disk" and see if it's in there? Is the drive making any noise like spin
up and spin down. The head arm might be stuck. You might want to try tapping
on the side of the drive lightly. Beware you could damage the drive doing
this how ever, what do you have to lose. I'd have a drive ready to transfer
files to.
The drive might be shot. Here are a few suggestions:
Call Apple, they have ways of retrieving data. I had a HD head crash and
the drive died. They told me they could transfer my data to the new drive
they were replacing on my ibook.
Disk Savers, this would cost some money though.
Last you could send the drive to me and I will see if I can get your data
back, when I have spare time to work on it.
What ever you decide to do, good luck!

this is the maxtor, but don't know where to go from here.
also, profiler says the unformatted size is 27.54 gig, though the maxtor
is 40???

oh, and no--
the maxor doesn't show up under "start up disks"--
it's curious that no driver is listed in the system profiler for the maxtor,
though it's worked for a number of years and only recently started to flake
out--
i'm thinking of going with the freezer suggestions next, though have no idea
what this means, how cold to get it,when to take it out,
or what the condensation factor will have....
or, for that matter, how to cook it later and whether a marinade is appropriate
or a simple
searing in a hot pan with a little olive oil...
the whole thing is getting pretty funny in a sorta frustrating way

I usually roll 'em in a plastic bag with silica gel to keep the moisture
down for about a half hour. Keep it away from 'wet' items like the ice tray
or ice cream cardboard containers, anything that has frost on it if
possible. Best if you have access to use a frost free fridge. When you pull
the drive out, have everything else ready to plug, boot and roll because
your time will be limited if it does help. Sometimes this works, sometimes
not.
Rinse/repeat until the drive finishes off or you get all the data you're
after. Toss the drive afterward in the trash heap if this does work because
it's a goner for useful data storage.

Pull it out and immediate reconnet...Start copying the most important

What is funny, is that you "freeze"drives to get the data from it, but you
'"bake" audio tapes to get the data from them.....

the technical answer to this is a little beyond me--
i seem to remember an enginner, while describing
thie bake (no shake) technique, saying that it had to do
with removing any accumulated humidity and getting
those little particles to stand up straight.
a "real" engineer could give you the straight dope on
this. i am sure that you can only bake your tape once,
and you'd better have a way to store the data immediately-- curiously again,
just like freeze drying a hard disc.

Hey JP.. I have another idea. Buy a cheap USB case and stick the drive in
it. Boot another computer and plug it in. See if you get the same results.
This eliminates completely it being your mac IDE bus. Also, I don't know,
but is it possible to boot that machine from USB? Might be something else to
try and having a USB removable IDE-> USB is really not a bad thing.

I think a FireWire case would be a better bet. Those old G3s only had the
slower USB v1.

yeah, the thing seems to whine a bit at times,
but it was always quieter than the HD that came with the mac--
i took off the jumper (j50), which was supposed to allow the Maxotr
to turn into a slave, and then the Maxtor didn't show up
at all!! not even in the system profiler.
i regret that i don't understand this stuff more.

Try putting the jumper on Master and see if it shows up. If that doesn't
work, you could also try moving the jumper around.
