oh yawn.. :)

Well, I much prefer OSX to Windows XP, and I've been using both for years and Windows since 3.11. Given the Mac Mini's size and form factor (part of what you pay for), I would hardly say that it's overpriced. If your looking to save space and be able to cart the thing around easily, it's certainly an attractive option. And the Mac Mini's are nice for running node computers in logic 7.

Cheers,

TC

I love my new MacBook Pro. I picked it up primarily to have a portable solution
to take with me when I am away from home, but it also works great as a node
for Logic or as “Rack-O-Logic” when I am running DP or Paris.
It’s a very powerful computer exceeding what my G5 2X2 can do by a fair amount.
It hooked up to my Linksys 811 router without even looking at the directions
and it gets over three hours of hard work on a charge.

I can’t wait for Magma to build an ExpressCard/34 slot card. Then I can run
Paris under XP Pro on my laptop Mac :-)

I was just posting the info about it. I'm not looking for the big Mac vs.
Windows debate. However, I will give my prospective on the over price Mac.

There is a lot of ways of looking at things. People for years have said
ignorant things like there's no software for the Mac. Well the Mac has been
able to run Windows for about 15 years. The fact is and has been that the
Mac has been able to run all the Mac software, and the great majority of
windows software. That's more than a PC can do. I think that is value.
Now it will run Windows natively, I think that is value. I can run all
my software on my Mac, cruse the internet, run Paris or other audio software,
all on the same machine with out being concerned with viruses. I think that
is value and piece of mind. I don't have to buy two machines, I've seen
on this NG where people have said that they have two machines and they never
go on the net with their audio work station. I think that is ridiculous.
What do two machines cost? What do two machines cost to maintain?

I agree with you that Apple computers are over priced! That is vary disappointing
for any Mac user. However, I still think that there is value, and some advantages
with a Mac. I think you have to look at the overall picture, the cost of
the box is not the only thing to factor in.

I've always said, if your a PC guru and you have years in to learning the
ins and outs of a PC, there is no sense in learning a Mac. This, I think
is about to change. What if Apple computers cost about the same? Not that
this is going to happen any time soon, but, would you consider buying one
then? What if Mac OSX could run any and all of your windows based software
natively without speed issues. Would you consider the purchase of an Apple
computer? This could vary well be Apple's first step in kicking that door
open and doing just that. (Pure speculation on my part; ) )

I think it is a step forward, It gives people choices. The bad news is,
Apple does point out that if you use Windows XP on a Mac, that your machine
will be subject to attacks and all the windows viruses.

I use and like both Windows XP and Mac OS.

Well.. I put in Boot Camp tonight (Apple’s Wizard for installing XP), but
I could not complete the XP install because it requires XP SP2 and my installer
is SP1 :-(
I will try WaveLab and V-Stack when I get it working and I will report back.
I understand that the built in SPDIF ports work fine in XP, but MIDI and
FireWire audio will be new territory.

Sounds to me like the installer wants to see an SP2 bootable

Thanks
I wish that would work but people trying to get around the requirement for
a “Single install CD WITH SP2” are getting into trouble.

Hey Gene! Somewhere around here I think I have a SP2 upgrade disc. If you
need it, I would mail it to you. It sounds like that won't help you though.
Let me know, and I'll see if I can find it.

I here with SP2 there is a lot of connecting to the mother ship. If Bill
could only read people's minds remotely; )

Well it's about time. Another crappy, proprietary OS to run on expensive,
shiny hardware. But here's the thing. The hacker community already had this
working

http://onmac.net/

for quite some time now. And Apple was sniffing around them with DMCA threats
being the good hearted slobs they are. Can you get source to Boot Camp? Can
you read the filesystem from the other partition? I also wonder if Apple
hijacked some BSD licensed boot loader, but I digress.

That said, and I can't believe I'm writing this, Apple has added NINE BILLION
DOLLARS of market cap since Monday close. When markets closed Monday you
could go to the above website and downlaod a bootloader that would let you
run XP on a Mac. Or if you were a little smarter you could put Ubuntu on
it. Then, on Tuesday, Apple announced that users could do what users already
could do. And thanks to that they are now worth another nine billion dollars
and are trading at THIRTY THREE TIMES earnings. The next person who tells
me markets are efficient is getting a ball peen hammer to the temple.

Yeah, Smart! Apple gave the people what they wanted. I guess your saying
that Apple are the thieves of the computer industry??? Well you can still
use the hacked version, apple said they wouldn't stop you.

And for Apple's next trick,....running windows software under Mac OSX!

I think what he's saying is that Apple is just as sleazy as they've always
branded Microsoft to be......which is what I've been saying all along
anyway.

It is a hard thing for any corporation to resist.

Years ago, Soichiro Honda said: "The American automobile
companies think that they make money; they forgot that they
really make cars"

At one point, if things have been profitable, someone will run the
company who will decide that they no longer make cars, cool
computers, great music, or good mixers, and decide that they
now make money. They soon lose their reputation and core
clientele, but often cash out for zillions in the process. It sucks.

As some of you know, a while back, new management
fired the entire Mackie US work force and sent manufacturing to
China, and now Mackie is "Mackie" as in a brand that is being mined
for every last dollar while the bigshots maximize profit until the
brand dies a well-deserved death. I saw three new Mackie SR-24's
DOA in 3 months... Think GM.

I don't know if this is happening with Apple or not. I can tell you
that my Mini has been great, as have the G5's I have put in clients
facilties. However, I can also tell you that a problem I had with
folders populating was NEVER resolved and the jerkoff Apple tech
support guy just stopped returning my calls... Yet, calling Macs
overpriced is only fair if you assemble your own hotrod PC because
a G5 is simply in another league compared to a cheap Dell or a
Costco generic PC. A really good PC that does music well will cost
you as much as a G5 or more. When I move over to Sequoia, I will
buy a rack PC from them, all setup and optimized. Not cheap,
but I can get to work making rockin' music instead of doodling with
the dang thing. You can buy a G5 with Logic and FCP and go
to work on it today. I know, I install them.

As I've said, I do not care about your computer, I care about your
music, and your studio.

And you DJ, your studio looks mahhveluss... (too many computers
tho...)

heh

There have been long standing complaints in the free software community that
while Apple abides by the BSD licence for all of the code it has to, they
are not particularly good citizens. Of course Apple chose the BSD code precisely
because the license says you _can_ steal it, so they don't have to do anything,
but I find it offensive that Apple saves enormous amounts of money by using
BSD code while, for example, the OpenBSD project is begging for money.

http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=2006032103411 4

I find that repellant, maybe you don't. Of course Apple isn't doing anything
illegal, I just think it's wrong.

As far as putting Windows on your Mac, go for it! My friends who ask me to
set up computers for them all get Ubuntu now anyway, and I haven't heard
many complaints.

XP is in and running great. The entire process was very fast once I had an
appropriate XP install disk. I wont get around to trying any music programs
under XP till later or tomorrow.

I never understood why non-Mac people react with such vigor when attacking
all things Apple. But I don’t care. Just leave me alone to spend my money
on tools I like. This box seems like it should appeal to just about everyone.
Its fast, sleek and runs both systems…No wonder so many people are quick
to attack it. Is there cheaper stuff… sure knock yourself out.
I love the logic that Apple is an unscrupulous company. This always seems
to imply that Microsoft is somehow better, or for that matter, how about
all the Labels we deal with or the corruption in radio etc, etc, etc.

For the latest on the rotten underbelly of the music industry see:
http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=173928

Back to the MacBook.
I took this self-portrait using the built in camera in my studio last night.
Macs are cool.

Sleaze is a relative thing. What offends me about Apple is that they are no
different than Microsoft.. They just try to make the public believe they
are. In reality, the corporate thinking is the same.....survival at all
costs. Nothing particularly wrong with this from a corporate standpoint.
It's what corporations do.

Just to be clear, I say things at least as bad about M$oft as I do about Apple.
I find them wanting for specific reasons, but for the same general sins.
They act like after I buy one of their products I have no rights. They presumptively
treat my like a crimminal by using invasive DRM. They use file formats they
won't disclose which makes me reliant on _them_ (in terms of survival and
permission) for the future integrety if my data. I put up with both of them
because I have no choice. But I'm not a Mac basher, or rather I bash other
organizations with similar or greater ferocity.

Gene,

I like my Macs too, but please let people know you edited that picture. They
might try to use it as proof that the Mac's built-in camera is lame! ;>)

Cool pic though. Reminds me of Pink Floyd for some reason.

I did not edit the pic! The built-in tools include a number of cool filters
including the one that I used to take the photo.
I'm so psychedelic!!

"And for Apple's next trick,....running windows software under Mac OSX!"

Rather, Apple starts to sell an OS-X version that'll run on a PC?????? hummmmmmmmm???

Either way, I love this new development for a few good reasons.
1)Now, mac users can run Cubase SX/Nuendo in it's naitive code which will
yeild better workflow results.

2)PC users can now "justify a good $$ reason to own a Mac.Not just a one
trick pony.

3)This will lure old Logic audio users back to the Apple hardware

4) Apple wcan gain back it's PC logic user base which it lost by going Mac
only..

I guess I have just been lucky. I bought my first Macintosh in 1986 within
a few months of its initial release. It was my 6th computer following:

Altair S-100 Kit
Sinclair
Apple II
Tandy TRS 80 Model 1
Commodore 64

I have never had a major problem with any of my Macs or most of my other
computers, so I just judge them by what they bring to the party.
Joshua Thompson and I got our first deals (Major label covers and a publishing
deal with MCA Music) based on our work in DR. T. on our Commodore 64 recorded
to a Tascam 8-track.
I never really thought the gear was what made it happen.

These days I am in "Computer Heaven" and I cant help but giggle a little
when I hear people criticize modern tools or say a laptop with horsepower
far exceeding an entire multi-million dollar studio of fifteen years ago
is over-priced.
It’s all good.
Gene
PS
Stylus RMX Universal Binary v1.6.0b5 is running well on the MacBook in Logic
under Intel/OSX.

I get ya Deej. Even in my day job at my family's little tiny Buick
dealership I have to listen to people grind on about how we must be making a
killing or are trying to gouge them, etc. etc. I wish everyone could put
there money where their mouth is and see just how easy it isn't to run a
profitable business while complying with a billion government requirements,
state and federal taxes, providing affordable healthcare for employee's,
OSHA regulations, cash flow management, etc. Not all corporations are evil
money grubbing pigs. Most of us small guys struggle to eek out a middle
class wage just like everyone else. I'm not saying Apple is good or bad as a
company. When you get huge like that, the focus always goes away from the
customer toward the share holders. It's the way our wacky system works. That
aside, Apple does seem to be pretty good at industrial design, and to an
extent a little better at innovation than some other companies out there.
Are they perfect? Far from it. Are they the Devil? If so, I guess I'm
destined to burn baby. I'm just glad they've finally realized that
integration with the PC world is the right direction.

And puhleeze let it run AutoCad!

I don't want to use a PC just to get this vital program...

Here's how you do it. If you want Pro Tools, you call Digi and ask
for the latest G5 that PT's has been tested on. Get the Apple
part number. Buy that one, not the one the nice Apple salesboy
tells you to buy. Install it, it works. I have done this quite a few

times.

Buy Logic or FCP, and a new G5. No debugging.

Buy this whole setup:

No debugging...

Yes, you can save money building your own, but you can save
money building your own mic pres too, I've done it. Now I just
buy the whole deal all debugged already and go to work.

But that is how you get stuff that works! And I must say that
Mac people are WAY less proprietary than PC people. I have been
trying to get Autodesk to port AutoCad over to Mac for a decade
and they won't do it. MOST mac app writers are cross-platform
minded, and most PC writers are not. Also I have seen IT pukes
try to enforce a "no macs" policy on entire campus. The faculty
laugh at them, then the IT pukes try to get purchase-order veto
power on all computers, then the faculty get together and go to the
provost and the provost tells the IT pukes to go fall in the porta
potties and die. You would not believe how nasty this has gotten
on some college campuses... People have gotten fired or resigned
over this stupid issue.

Actually, I have a principle I call DC's Law. Since all equipment fails

at some point, it says that the possibility of equipment failure at any
given moment is exponentially related to the number of pieces of
equipment in a studio. At some point, the possibility of equipment failure
reaches 100%. Each computer is worth 25 Pultecs in
estimating your failure probability for any given session...

I've been looking at this for a while now...........very proprietary.......

http://www.wk-audio.de/?Virtual-Internet-Controler

and very cool for controlling Nuendo, only Nuendo and nothing but
Nuendo.....and they will build a dual opteron DAW for it and throw in an RME
MADI and enough RME converters to track a respectable session all for around
$35k+ depending on what you need.........a nice alternative to a PT TDM
system .......but if, and only if, the DAW will run lots of proprietary DSP
hardware. I wouldn't mind taking on building a dual dualcore Opteron box and
configuring it to run FW and UAD-1 PCI DSP processors. It would probably
save me around $5k off the cost of the turnkey system, but then I was
probably a dentist in a previous life......plus, it would likely screw up
their warranty. they sell these at West LA music. I'll be in LA in about 2
weeks. Maybe we should go see if they've got one of these to play around
with.

I agree. If I had the budget, I'd grab a MBP right now. I use OSX
for the most part at home, but when I'm travelling, I have to take my
ThinkPad because DeLorme' got out of the Mac market, and there isn't a
comparable Mac GPS product available.

Natively dual-booting is the killer app that will sell a ton of MBP's.
Hopefully by the end of the year I'll have one in the budget.

As an 'IT puke' who works at a University I can assure you that this is 24
karat horseshit. In 99% of the cases us 'IT pukes' are forced to cater to
the silliest whims of academics with too much time on their hands who don't
know a mousepad from a malted milk. Including supporting their creaky old
Macs they love so much and that don't deal with MIME attachments properly
and use medieval networking like Appletalk (great for a home office, not
great chatting away with every device on the network), and so on.

And if proprietariness [sic] is what 'makes things work' then why is the
most popular and stable web server Apache? Why is the most secure and stable
operating system BSD? Why does IBM recommend Linux to their customers? What
'makes things work' is open standards and punishment for those refusing to
follow them. Case in point being MIDI, which I can use to plug my brand new
M-Audio interface into my MIDI equipped Prophet 10. And TCP/IP which, for
all its warts having been built in the late 60's, still manages to fling
a few billion bits of data all over the world every day. If people thought
like you do then MSoft would have long ago broken the few standards that
exist in HTML and they'd own the web and then I'm sure it would 'just work'
too.

Hey DC - ummm, that might be your perspective from Autocad, and while it's
probably an industry standard for the design world (not in that business),
it's hardly a reference for which camp is the most cross platform minded,
and it's been PC based for longer than the Mac could run design software,
and being a math-based approach, it is probably better suited to Intel style
cpus. Motorola 68k series (early-mid Macs) were graphics cpus - not great
for number crunching. So, porting to Mac might be too costly for Autodesk,
at least for that application based on it's code and design. Sometimes the
changes are so significant that it's a complete rewrite from the ground up.

I see the other perspective, being a former Logic user - need I say more?
It was Mac based, then finally added PC support, then Apple nixed that, now
it's Mac only, forevermore. I can't think of a PC developer that ditched
the Mac platform just because it was "the other" platform.

Companies that are cross-platform are usually ones that need, or want
customers in both camps to maximize their market and have a product that is
easy to port. Companies that are platform-centric usually can't afford to
port, or don't have enough customers needing it to warrant the development
cost. Just economics, not politics, unless you are Apple or Microsoft (Win
Media Player support for Macs being dropped - Quicktime support for PCs
seems to be dying out also as QT7 has been inoperable on PC for over a year
with no fix in sight).

Dedric
