Hi Bill,
I used a low end two war Carvin for years that was pretty good
and like you say less expensive. Blew the 1/2 throat drivers
on the horns once or twice. I now own SRM 450 Mackies=20

that have a better sounding horn than the EONs for my money. The EON's =
horn
always hurts the whole system's sound. EQ doesn't remedy their problem =
to
my ear. The Mackie is shy in the bass but EQ is your friend.
If I'm planning on slamming them in big rooms I carry a JBL
MRX 518 http://www.thomann.de/gb/jbl_mrx_518_s.htm?partner_id=3D7357 2
and power it with one side of a Crown XTI 4000. =

That makes big tight bass and power for a second cab. The Crown weighs =
18lbs and puts
out 1200 watts/side @ 4 ohms. Serious grunt. The MRX 518 olds the =
Mackie with a pole too.
It isn't too heavy but bulky. One is enough for all of my indoor =
venues. Two for outdoor with another=20
larger top end rather than the Mackies.
I haven't heard Carvin PA stuff in decades. It might still be the best =
low $ deal.
The Mackies are light (37lbs) and powered. Running an AC line to them =
can be a
hasslehoff but not as bad as 75lbs is per cab and an old power amp.
Listen to the stuff if you can. The give away for me is the =
horns/crossover. I've found
bottom end easier to dial in than a sweet top with less than perfect =
cabs which is what
we're talking about here. Remember at indoor venues the bass/low mids =
coming off the back of those=20
cabs carrying down the backstage wall can have dire consequences with =
multiple open mics.

Both the Eon and the Mackie are decent and can sound good with
a bit of massaging.
These, however

Studio grade sound, great projection, clear as a bell, sweet and really
powerful. There is a version with a built in amp as well.
More money of course, but if you are playing out, and really want to
sound phenomenal, there is nothing out there as good. And, because
they are dual-concentric (horn fires through the center of the woofer)
they are very compact. We install these all over the western states.

Those look pretty snazzy. A little heavy but I'll bet they are smooth.
Well, they look smooth anyway. I considered using my Genelec 1037s
live too. A little too heavy but not too big. They would do some nice
work for a small PA.
The multi trip, weight thing with no roadie and doubles on the weekend =
got me out=20
of moving my 3 way EAWs (88lbs on tripods) (Extra Added Weight) and 2 x =
900 watt=20
@ 8 ohm power amps in the 90s.

I wondered about the weight thing. The Mackie SRM 450 actually
weighs about 1 lbs. more than the powered version of the V12
(known as the Power V12), they are both about 50 lbs.
The V12 , BTW, is a totally different product than the studio monitor
line and will cover large amounts of people, even outdoors where studio
monitors will not. I once did a brass quintet with a pair of them, a Mackie
1202, an amp, and a pair of KM84's. Sounded like a CD, and it was
outdoors for 700 people. Their only drawback is the price... The street
price for the passive V12's is 3K a pair, and the powered are about
4600 a pair. You can get a pair of SRM450's for about 1400 or less.

Hah! No, just T-Shirt... There is no comparison though. With EQ,
without EQ, V12's just slaughter Eons or SRM45o's.
They should for the money...

I'm still using an ancient EV "Entertainer" system for solo gigs
(powered mixer and 12" 2-way speakers, at about 35lb each). It still
sounds decent and it won't die. Good stuff. So for my next system I will
definitely consider the new EVs you suggest.
I have considered getting a Bose L1 system (played through a couple and
they work well for some kinds of gigs) but it weighs about the same as
the EV system, is about as time consuming to set up, doesn't include a
real mixer and is mono only. The new Bose L2 has a slightly lighter
tower base component but is more expensive and offers less inputs unless
you buy the add-on FX/remote.
Another new "plastic box" system I've seen recently: Peavy has some
inexpensive 2-way powered 10s, 12s and 15s that are remarkably light,
and non-powered version that are even lighter. Can't comment on the
sound but some reviewers have claimed they are as good or better than
the JBLs and Mackies. Dunno.

LOL!, yah, we have some of the black face and the later grey face
Entertainer mixers here... most are dead. Great little rig for the day
though. The S100 tweeter diaphragms are still available, but they
discontinued the foam surround cones for the woofers (although we still
have a couple). If you ever need to get them re-coned, you will have to
use a Force 12 kit.

yes, that was a bad move IMO. We had several DOA Mackie
mixers after the move, and are now using mostly Allen & Heath.
Mackie management fired 200 people, closed the WA plant,
and, using the brand recognition, made knock-offs of their
own gear and pocketed millions...

I recently replaced an RCF woofer that was blown (the first problem ever
after around 7 years full time) and the Chinese replacement woofer =
sounds=20
very close to the 7 year old RCF. I was lucky enough to have the RCF =
reconed
with original components that were purchased before Mackie screwed the =
pooch=20
on those guys. That one sits in a box waiting for it's day. The RCF =
recone was as
expensive as the replacement Chinese woofer. We'll see if the Chinese =
model
lasts with the punishment I give it. It's probably seen 50 performances =
without
a problem so far.
The one thing that surprises me is that the plastic Mackie cab does not =
rattle
or buzz after all this abuse. I figured that would be the first thing =
to go. It isn't
as pretty as I'd like and I'm not sure how to remove the scuffs. Any =
ideas on
that?

I did a gig where I had to use Mackie SRM450's and once I found that
gritchy upper mid thing and pulled it down a bit, they sounded pretty
darn decent. If you have a stereo parametric, they would make a
good alternative.

Stay away from the sx300, the horns blow out like a candle in a fan factory.
I worked with a guy that got about 6 shows out of 4 of them, and the horns
were all dead by the beginning of the 7th show. We had to pinch hit with a
pair of SP series Peaveys, unhappily.

I will have to disagree with you on this one... The 7 piece
R&B band (live horns) I do sound for has a pair of T52's for
top end. These use the same 81514XX diaphragms that all
their stage boxes having 1" drivers use. For 10 years, I
have been powering these 2 boxes with 1/2 of a Crown
Vz3600... that's 800W clean per box on a cab rated for 400W.
I run that amp right up to ODEP kicking in on a REGULAR
basis, and I have only taken out 3 diaphragms in all that
time. Even with large chunks of the titanium missing, they
STILL produce high end!
I think your friend should look at how he is powering the
300's.... ;-)
