Senior Member

A PS in comp I built for a friend blew some caps the other day and he had
to replace it.
I have the same PS in my comp and if you guys recall I beleive I posted here
before about how sometimes I have to hit the power button 9 times before
it will boot up. The power will kick on for 1 sec and then go off completely.
I was thinking that maybe my PS was flaking out too.
So rather than risk it crapping out later and damaging my MB I am going to
purchase a new PS.
I need suggestions on good top of the line PSs.
My friend ended up getting a Thermaltek at the suggestion of our local electronics
store (Frys). I would like to keep it under 1 hundred, but hit me with suggestions
for anything more if it is worth the extra cash for the quality.

I got a regular 'ol 600W Antec at CompUSA a few years ago &
been runnin' it ever since... I think it was about 60 bucks
(at the time). Nothin fancy-schmancy, just a regular plain-
Chevy Antec.

If noise is an issue, you might check out endpcnoise.com. They have some
low noise PSs at reasonable cost. The Antec Neo 430w low noise model runs
around 85$. Its best to use the actual wattages you need, as the bigger the
PS gets, generally the more noise. I've gotten my PCs so quiet now that
they don't need isolation.

These are all quiet one. There are many high end server ones but they
sure ain't quiet...

DO NOT skimp on wattage or quality just for the quiet part. You will not
find a quality power supply under 100 bucks. I would not recommend
anything under 450 watts for a system made int he past 3 years,.
Shitty power supplies are cause many of peoples computer troubles. A
shitty power supply has the same effect on a computer that one would in
piece of pro audio gear. The power supply is one of the first areas
people try to cut corners on when it should be the last place. :)

I have been reading reviews and this is the best I have found so far that
gives me a warm fuzzy.

No I didnt pick it because of its positive reviews.
I picked it for its lack of negative reviews.
I looked at cheap to pricy PSUs.
I read the Cons first to get an idea of the manufacturing quality. If the
cons arent too bad I will read the pros.
This seems to have everything I need.
Not settled on it..it is just the first one that gives me a warm fuzzy.

Hi Brandon,
We use the Thermaltake EPS ones like this on our Opteron and Xeon
machines. We mainly use the 750 and 100watt one though ...:)
You would be good with this one.

I started comparing the Efficiency rates and amperage on the rails and the
Cons people had etc..
This is the first that stands out to me.
I dont want more than I need, but I do want a rock solid PSU.

The one I pointed out is very quiet though, just in case you want to save
$100.00. Not completely silent, but definitely not loud. Anyway, my review
of it would have been much more positive than the ones on NewEgg.

I've never replaced a PS. Unlike a simple fan replacement, where there
are two wires to connect, the PS seems to have several dozen wires to connect
to all sorts of places :).
I ask because I have a very quiet room and a Magma in the closet which sounds
like a very loud vacuum cleaner. Is there a standard plug on the power supply
end which lets you leave all the many wires in place?

I have a thermaltake eps 750 watt in my video machine and the thing is
whisper quiet. 14 cm fan, 85% efficiency.
highly recommend it. i think they have a 1200 watt out now, with connectors
on the box, no more bungi cords in the box for that unused cable!
