Interested as well. I believe I heard it has to be an Intel machine though. I assume you mean a hackintosh running XP running Paris, which doesn't make sense since you'd already be on XP anyway. Paris on Mac only runs 9.2.2 which won't run on an AMD/Intel board right?

Yep Ted, I think that's right - I don't think a Hackintosh (at least as the term is currently used) can run Mac OS9. It'd only be of PARIS relevance insofar as it can still boot a Windows OS like XP. But since that's probably pretty much a "given" I'd say that likely means a "thumbs up" to the Hackintosh idea.

To move more on into this... what's the LATEST OSX that Paris can run on ?? that the Paris's Mac drivers can actually run within ??

Here in Egypt and in many other countries, Pro Tools can be run within even Snow Leopard ( osx 10.5.6 ) and up, best environment is actually Leopard ( 10.5.8 ) , I haven't YET tried either , but I know of a few friends that have , and PT is running smoothly .

From my readings , it's best to have a hard drive that's totally devoted to the OSX , will reduce the number of glitches .Yet my question is ( sorry if I am repeating myself ) , what's the latest OSX that Paris can run within ? then to check if it is "Hackintoshable" or not .

The plugin issue is probably what's going to eventually drive me to another DAW. Paris won't run in OS 10 (I'm a Mac guy) and none of the new plugins run in OS 9 anymore. Paris also doesn't have latency compensation for plugins so offline editing for automation is a challenge. Embarassed

Sad

Yasser -

I feel your pain. I'm a long time Mac user too. But for the reasons you cite (plugins being up to date, latency compensation etc) I'm switching to PC running XP. This will at least improve things considerably. Delay compensation is available on PC through the Senderella plugin that Dimitrios has found, and most of the latest plugs (Waves, UAD, Firewire based units like Liquid Mix) will run with the correct wrappers.

Send a note to Mike Audet. Apparently there are a bunch of Mac guys with MacPros
booting into XP to run Paris with an expansion chassis. As it turns out, the new Windows box I'm getting will have PCI slots for my EDS cards, and PCIe slots for UAD 2.

Having said this, if you just can't bring yourself to move to PC, try the new Harrison Mixbus. It is the best ITB solution I've used to date and since it's used together with Ardour (open source Linux) it is Mac only...

Regards

Ted

Yep - PARIS on the Mac was never released for OSX. The last Mac OS the PARIS app was released for was 9.2.2.

If I recall correctly (and please, anyone who can correct my recollections please chime in): after the PARIS venture folded, Edmund Pirali was quoted as saying quite explicitly (in paraphrase) that "if you build OSX drivers, I'll give you a version of PARIS that runs on OSX". It might just be my interpretation, but I could look at the confidence with which that was phrased and imagine that he'd either already had an OSX port of the app by that time or that he was completely confident it was do-able quick. Edmund is a stone Mac user - you can find him active on Apple's forums to this day - so it's not hard to imagine him looking ahead to that.

And there's the rub. Although the app was ID's job, as far as I know the underlying drivers for PARIS weren't - they were Emu/Ensoniq's (I'd imagine that's why the PARIS community got them in the code package Chuck negotiated from Emu). And no OSX drivers = PARIS OSX app not usable.

Folks in the community did pursue OSX Core Audio drivers; things were looking pretty hopeful for a while - parts of the drivers could be ported from what we have (I believe Doug said he ported the PSCL to Mac OSX easily enough). I don't want to trivialize the amount of work it would have required (audio on OSX can be a real drag) but it really just boiled down to man-hours of effort. If enough of those could have been thrown at it, it would have been long since done. But the effort was abandoned before it hit the point where it was worth asking Edmund to redeem the pledge for the OSX version of the app (since it would have done nothing without drivers).

Eventually Macs moved on to ditch PCI slots and embrace first PCIx and then PCIe. The PARIS cards wouldn't have worked in the new slots (although ironically the VirtuaVia chassis which eventually came along would likely have kept PARIS in the Mac game) - and that was pretty much that.

If someone, some day, is crazy and passionate enough to take on the job of writing or procuring OSX drivers for PARIS, I'll take on the job of pursuing that pledge with ID. It's certainly not any further out of the realm of possibility than any of the other things we've achieved this year; as mentioned, there might already be a port in a junk drawer somewhere; they're seriously dialled on OSX audio; and it might just be *fun*. But until and unless the community tackles the drivers, on our own, as our own initiative, PARIS Mac will remain forever frozen at OS 9.2.2.
