I am setting up a new box, using an ASUS A7V8X-X mobo. The bios won't
recognize the processor, Athlon xp 3200. The fastest the mobo will allow the
processor to run is 700mhz. Do I need to overclock the processor on this
mobo, or should it recognize the Barton processor without any tweaking?
Appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Rich

I think the XP 3000 is the fastest CPU that will work wit this mobo.

Is there any old bios update for that mobo to take care of the
problem?

Wow, didn't realize that. I just downloaded a pdf of the ASUS manual. I
guess I'll be forced to be a "power" user now and read it :-)

Thanks,
Rich

Thanks Erling. I just downloaded the BIOS upgrade. ASUS has a crash free
thingie so I won't sweat the flash too much. I have to get to work now so
I'll let you know how that goes later.

Deej, I downloaded the user guide from Asus and it does support the Barton
Chip, which I believe is the 3200 mhz chip. I can get the computer to post,
but now I have a temp. problem. The auto shutdown feature in the bios turns
off the computer. I've got to find out what the max. temp. allowable for the
cpu is.

The original Barton was 3000 mhz, but then they also named the Athlon XP
3200 chip the Barton too.

Don't forget, some BIOS' allow YOU to pick the shutdown temp...
you might check that first, to see if perhaps it's set too low
- obviously you don't want to set it too high because then in
the event of an overheat, you'll be facing meltdown instead of
shutdown, but I had a mobo wherein the BIOS defualted to a much-
too-low shutdown temp for the CPU I was using & I was able to
change it.

Good idea. Yes the bios does allow modification of the shutdown temp. I
haven't found out what the highest temp. the chip can run at before it melts
down. Right now it seems to be working fine, but I had to clock it slower
that it its normal speed.

Thanks,
Rich
