I was futs forwared an e-mail that was sent to a mutual friend by Steven's
wife and forwarded to me, as follows:

"Steven died in his sleep early this morning after a couple of truly
peaceful days. He woke once, Thursday evening, and found himself
surrounded by friends and family. He talked sleepily with all of us,
understood he was deeply loved, and told us he had been flying in a
wonderful and amazing place without pain. He woke again early Friday
morning and was as clear, strong, and aware as he had been in his
healthiest days. He told me he had been in "a place beautiful beyond
my life," told me he wanted to die and go back there, and fell into a
final sleep.
The world is a poorer place without him. Please carry him in your
thoughts, hearts, and prayers.
Thank you all for being there for him and for me."

Whatever your beef with ID, SSC was an interesting cat, to say the

But the SSC we know is spelled Stephen. There is another SSC according to
Google (Steven). Misspelling in translation? Any other info?

Dedric,
I didn't know him or his family personally. This info was forwarded to me by
a friend of his whom I met here on this NG, but who no longer posts here.
From other folks I've met who knew him, I have been told that his name was
Steven Marshall (as in Marshall Time Modulator-ring a bell?) and that the
name Stephen St. Croix was a pen name..

Very sad. When I started to get interested in audio enginnering about 20
years ago, I bought a MIX magazine and his column was one of the first
things I read. I had no idea what he was talking about but I figured I would
eventually.
Many years later it really knocked me out when, after I bought PARIS, I
found out it was his company that designed it.
Small world.
Talking to him on the NG and in the chats was always very interesting and
insightful.
I will remember him fondly.

Wow, this is unbelievable. Does anyone know what he suffered from? I
remember when I developed my dystonia, which affected my embouchure, he
wrote me a really thoughtful email, referring to an injury to his guitar
playing hand(s) and how he worked through it. He was very supportive and
insightful in his words which gave me much needed strength at a time when I
was really grieving. I'm really saddened by this. I didn't know you, but
will miss you SSC.

I have thoroughly enjoyed most of his Mix columns in recent years and had
totally forgotten about his involvement with Paris. He has been through so
much with his disabilitating motorcycle accident after recovering from
cancer or some other disease. He cetainly left his mark in this world and
will be missed.

Wow. I heard he'd had some issues, but didn't realise he was in that bad
a place.
Sounds like he was ready to go in the end, which is nice, though sad. At
least he left on the right foot.
The world is certainly a lesser place.

As I understand it, cancer, aggravated by effects of the accident was the
cause. He had been battling cancer for many years.

I've known him for years.
He is the only reason I bought Paris. No one could buy that guy's
opinions. He said what he thought and lived as he spoke.
Proud, rude, uncorruptible, out of control in a controlled way, and
brilliant as a quasar.
There is no one to replace him.

I appreciate you passing this information on.
I also recall reading his colums in Mix and thinking what wonderful ideas
he had -wraped in a nifty and engaging writing style. Whenever I picked
up Mix, I always checked out his stuff first. When I learned that he was
one of the Paris designers, it lent a very cool vibe to the product. Its
weird, but there has always been something "in" or "behind" Paris that had
the same tenor and tone of his colums. I'm saddened at his leaving this
place and time, but it seems that he's found a ride better than the best
Harley he's ever driven.

Sorry to hear that. I hung out with him and Jeff Baxter at the last Paris
NAMM show. Stephen was showing Jeff and I his scars from his motor cycle
accident and when he was shot up while working with the FBI. He said, that
was what delayed him from writing the Paris GUI on time for Paris 3.0. Jeff
showed me his Orange County Sheriffs badge. It was interesting hearing about
their law enforcement adventures. Stephen and I talked about aviation, He
was a pilot in the Swedish military and flew the SAAB fighter, and he said
he checked out on the F 16. I was telling him that my guitar player from
high school was an F-16 jock at Selfridge Air base. He's the the guy that
hires pilots over there.
Stephen was an interesting guy, we always hit it off well. Hope this is
some how misinformation, but if it's not, fair well and RIP SSC.

Sad to hear. As I understood up against the Paris-years, he was an
extraordinary strong person with healthproblems while living strongly. So
maybe it's now more understandable for us Paris fellows why Paris too had to
leave for the graveyard without dying. It's living stronly when we're taking
some care of the "healthproblems".

Yeah...sad for us on this side. Read lots of his mix stuff and bought Paris

This is quite sad. I'm not sure how much of what SSC said SSC did was actually
done by SSC, and I'm not even sure if SSC was always clear on that, but if
he did 15% of it he lived larger than most. My favorite SSC interaction by
far was at the 1999 or 2000 NAMM show where he blatantly, shamelessly, tauntingly,
and very nearly successfully tried to hijack my date. Right in front of me.
She resisted until she heard about the drive up highway 101 in the Italian
sports car, at which point she started to waver. We're still friends and
I remind her of that quite often. I knew he had been sick but hadn't emailed
him in a few years. He also gave me advice as a writer that was extremely
useful--don't keep copies of everything you write, because most of it isn't
that good and if you need to you can always find a copy of it later. It will
just clutter up your house.

SSC was always very interesting to listen to and I really enjoyed his
Mix article immensely. What an amazing life really. I think Paris is
more important than homeland security though and wish he could have
recruited Skunk Baxter over to Paris, It would have been a natural.
Was it just me or did you all perceive that SSC had a huge spiritual
energy. He just seemed very connected somehow. Maybe it was having
cash that helped. hehe. I'm sure Edmund and others are mourning the
loss of a very close and dear friend. I'm reminded of Mr. Eddie Kramer
of Hendrix fame who I met and recalled that he was still mourning the
loss 30 years later. Life is TOO real.
I recall SSC saying he worked on a famous movie soundtrack (probably
many), so does anyone recall what music he was involved in regarding
mixing and such? Was he into cowbell? :-) I would be interested.
It's a shame that I didn't know while he was here.

I'm often trying to digest Paris and there are probably less than a
handful of people on the planet that really know the totality of Paris
and SSC was one of those. What a system !

Palisades Park...........by Freddy Cannon. I remember it well. Cool calliope
instrumental break with the screamingrollercoasterpeople.
That song rocked and had a very interesting chord structure. I spent the

The sadest thing when someone passes away is for his/her beloved ones that
stay behind especially for kids...
These people nedd strength to carry on.
