Hi Kerry,

The writing on the wall says that the old forum is not coming back, and I would like to occasionally participate here, but am finding it really hard to figure out the best way to use this forum.

Is there any way to get a hierarchical view of the forum?

I just can't seem to get it to work. I switched to treeview mode but when I click individual links on the treeview nothing happens.

Chuck

PM me a link to a forum where it works the way you'd like to see it work - Frank at FUDforum is pretty responsive to requests, and since it's open source we can also modify it ourselves to do pretty much whatever we like.

I just changed a setting to "allow tree view for threads" (it defaults to "off" because they say it's CPU intensive, but I'm sure they're talking about larger forums than this) so give that a try and see if it improves things.

This link shows how it looks over here - first inside the thread in Tree View and then backing out and looking at the Main Subforum in Tree View (using the "back" button on my mouse between post viewings).

Thanks Kerry. That looks good, but when I click a link in the treeview nothing happens.

OK, that's weird. You're not seeing the same behaviour as in that screencast? I suppose you've already cleared your cache. I'll enquire with Frank but I need a bit more info; what's your browser/OS?

Ahah, I think I just inadvertently duplicated the issue - I logged into the forums from my wife's XP laptop and tree view doesn't work properly from this computer. I'll report it as a bug; stick with flat view until we get it resolved (if Frank can duplicate it a fix shouldn't take long, he's pretty "on the ball").

OK, Frank asks "what is your browser/version? is JavaScript enabled? Any errors reported in the JavaScript console?" There might be an insight in there.

XP
IE7
Javascript enabled
No javascript errors, but when I hover there doesn't seem to be any javascript action in the status bar either.

Thanks

And the reply -

Quote:
The user may have a problem on his system; or even a firewall or anti-virus program that blocks remote javascript (AJAX) calls.

Things to try:
- Check if other AJAX-based sites are working
- Try to disable firewall and/or anti-virus software
- Run a program like IEFix
- Upgrade to IE8

[FWIW, this sounds right for my wife's laptop, which is secured to the point of annoyance.]

PS: does tree view work when you view the main FUDForum site?

K, interesting. I have to go to work, but hopefully we'll nail this shortly. I suspect it's something I may inadvertently have done - a little knowledge is a dangerous thing Very Happy
