The bad news?

Typing Paris Newsgroup into google fails to show any relevant sites in the
top 100 listed, far as I could see. Poop.

On the other hand...

Googling "Paris Newsgroup" (in quotes) brings parisfaqs.com to the top. Paris.hiddensounds.com
is at six. news.parisnewsgroup.com is at eighteen.

Googling Ensoniq Paris Newsgroup brought homepage.mac.com/osxlover/ParisFAQs/
to the top of the list (which is basically www.parisfaqs.com). new.parisnewsgroup.com
also showed up at number eleven.

EmuEnsoniq paris newsgroup only brings two results. Paris.hiddensounds.com
and news.parisnewsgroup.com, which are both the same site. Can't miss with
that one.

Emu Ensoniq Paris Newsgroup once again brings Parisfaqs to the top of the
list. Paris.hiddensounds.com comes up second, with news.parisnewsgroup.com
at seven.

Emu Paris Newsgroup once again brings parisfaqs up as first. news.parisnewsgroup.com
is at eight.

Google appears to have dropped the links to the old www.greatidea.com links.
Unfortunately Paris Newsgroup not in quotes doesn't get us on the list, but
anybody who adds a brand name in should be able to find us.

Looks like we've survived the change of url.

Cheers,
Kim.

Do you have all the appropriate keyword strings in all their
likely search permutations set in HTML for the homepage? For
example: "Paris Newsgroup, Paris News Group, Paris FAQ, Paris
Users, Paris Users Group, Paris -Hilton, Paris -Hilton FAQ,
Paris DAW, Paris Audio, Emu Paris, Ensoniq Paris, EmuEnsoniq
Paris, Paris MEC, Paris EDS, Paris 442, Paris Converters, Paris
Gear, Paris Gear for sale, Paris gear 4 Sale", etc, etc, etc.

I know you're a pretty smart guy with regard to this stuff,
Kimmers, so you prolly already know this, but just in case you
didn't, you may want to add these keyword strings to your
homepage HTML, separated my commas, as indicated. Again, please
don't be offended if you already have this stuff set up, I just
thought I'd mention it, in case you weren't aware of how much
this can increase the search engine rankings, depending on what
people type in in any given search engine, Google or otherwise.

Indeed I do already know this, but I am slack to the same degree that I am
knowledgable, and hence while I do know that you can add metatags and keywords
to allow search engines to better understand what the site is about, I'm
yet to actually do it, so your reminder is quite fair. ;o)

The fact that we've done this well without me even really trying shows just
how well the site would probably do if I was to put the effort in. I should
get off my proverbial. I do have some web stuff I need to do in the next
monthor so. It may be time for an update to the newsgroup site, at which
point I can update some of those bad links on the site, and insert some keyword
tags and the like...

Indeed, to get things moving, I might start a thread...

Cheers,
Kim.

OK then, for starters, just try copying & pasting this exact
thread into your HTML for the homepage:

<meta name="Keywords" content="Paris Newsgroup, Paris News
Group, Paris FAQ, Paris Users, Paris Users Group, Paris
-Hilton, Paris -Hilton FAQ, Paris DAW, Paris Audio, Emu Paris,
Ensoniq Paris, EmuEnsoniq Paris, Paris MEC, Paris EDS, Paris
442, Paris Converters, Paris Gear, Paris Gear for sale, Paris
Gear 4 Sale">

(NOTE: this should include the ">" at the end, and the "<" at
the beginning, plus each & every quotation mark shown in the
list above... however, it should all be on one line in your
HTML).

Make sure there's no spaces except for the obvious ones
(between the commas & the next keyphrase, plus any space
between separate words in each keyphrase... avoid double-
spaces, IOW).

That'll get you started, anyway :)

Cutting and pasting complete. I even fixed up the text which said we'd been
running on the new server for a month now. ;o)

Now if there's no permissions issues on the server it should be working already.
;o)

Cheers,
Kim.

With my old band's site I used to go alter the first page a little (every
two weeks or so) and that seemed to keep me at the #1 spot...really don't
know if there was any correlation between that action and our consistant #1
posting

Well, I've made a very minor update last night, adding the meta tags and
making a minor text change. I've also resubmitted to google, as well as yahoo/altavista,
so hopefully I'll get scanned again in the next few days.

I'll be making some more major changes in the next few weeks. With any luck
the added meta tags, along with a couple of site updates, might nudge us
up the list.

I'll try and remember to check the rankings a month or so after that's done,
and see what influence it has.

I'm actually thinking that, as far as modifying the pages goes, maybe I wont
have to do that, given that the actual newsgroup has a web component, which
obviously changes constantly. Hence the pages I link to have constant updates,
even if the front page does not. How related the content on the group is
to Paris of course is up for question. ;o)

Cheers,
Kim.

This is correct.

I notice that parisnewsgroup.com redirects to parisfaqs.com? that might not
be optimal if you're trying to grab paris newsgroup keywords..

If thats what you're going for, update the title tag for parisfaqs.

Yeh, it's all kinda complex. Doug Wellington owns the parisnewsgroup.com
domain not me. He still has the www.parisnewsgroup.com domain pointed at
his FAQ's site, whereas news.parisnewsgroup.com points at my server, and
webnews.parisnewsgroup.com points at my domain paris.hiddensounds.com, which
in turn points at my server, hence both go to the newsgroup's website if
you put the in a browser. I think part of the reason for this arrangement
was that parisfaqs became the default fallback Paris site while the newsgroup
changeover was occuring.

It seems that google doesn't particularily like what Doug's done though,
as www.parisnewsgroup.com doesn't even show on any of the searches I did.
Kind of a waste of a good URL really.

But it's Doug's domain so it's up to him.

Cheers,
Kim.

>>> The bad news?

>>> Typing Paris Newsgroup into google fails to show any relevant sites in

>>> the
>>> top 100 listed, far as I could see. Poop.
>>>
>>> On the other hand...
>>>
>>> Googling "Paris Newsgroup" (in quotes) brings parisfaqs.com to the top.
>>> Paris.hiddensounds.com
>>> is at six. news.parisnewsgroup.com is at eighteen.
>>>
>>> Googling Ensoniq Paris Newsgroup brought
>>> homepage.mac.com/osxlover/ParisFAQs/
>>> to the top of the list (which is basically www.parisfaqs.com).
>>> new.parisnewsgroup.com
>>> also showed up at number eleven.
>>>
>>> EmuEnsoniq paris newsgroup only brings two results.
>>> Paris.hiddensounds.com
>>> and news.parisnewsgroup.com, which are both the same site. Can't miss

>>> with
>>> that one.
>>>
>>> Emu Ensoniq Paris Newsgroup once again brings Parisfaqs to the top of
the

>>> at seven.
>>>
>>> Emu Paris Newsgroup once again brings parisfaqs up as first.
>>> news.parisnewsgroup.com
>>> is at eight.
>>>
>>> Google appears to have dropped the links to the old www.greatidea.com
