This is what Gene was talking about in a thread a few days back. It would
make more sense to buy a Mac and upgrade it right now. Probably not in 6
months though depending on what transpires with Win 64 bit OS. It does
appear that Apple has the upper hand though as far as a mature 64 bit OS
goes. Vista is looking more and more like a total cluster**** at the
moment......no surprise there. My objections to Mac have to do with a
closed, proprietary system. that's going to change whether they like it or
not.
For me, to go Mac would involve buying all new PCIe audio hardware or
spending $2000+ to integrate my existing PCI hardware with a PCIe>PCI SBS
expansion (or other) chassis......and also switching to a different editor
since I use WL (though I guess I could run bootcamp and Win XP for this).
In another year, things could be very different though. Vista may be sorted
out, the new AMD quads look pretty incredible and though they will
definitely be offered in Macs too, I doubt that there's a chance in hell
that you will be able to use them in a Macintel. It will involve buying
(sigh).................... another Mac. Now if the Mac mobo's were priced
reasonably, could be substitued for the MacIntel mobo in an existing Mac and
the rest of the system components could be used in the new comp, going Mac
would make sense to me. I'd say that's about as likely to happen as me
getting a call for a seat on the next space shuttle flight.

there are two borgs because drivers haven't been developed for Linux that
will work with everything that we need to do music production. I don't care
much for Apple, I'll admit, but I don't havea problem using any OS that will
get me where I want to go. I don't really give a rat's ass about OS'es
because I only want a computer to do specific things....not be a jack of all
trades, master of none, which is the thinking of Mac, IMHO. In any event,
add the priceing of parts o the lack of any real advantages (to me) of using
Mac OS, and I come up with a negative. When I see a positive, I won't have
any problem going Mac, or anything else.

I have the same machine, no crashes, no problems. Your machine is five years
old, and it's still usable and running!
It sounds like you have a software conflict or a corrupted installation.
If you installed 10.4 Tiger over the top of and older installation, I know
you have a corrupted installation. There were a lot of problems with installing
that way on the G4s. Back up, wipe the drive and do a new install.
If you have a non powered USB hub connected, that can cause you problems,
or not work. I have a bad IO Gear USB KMV switch that has caused me problems.
it causes USB sink to be lost. It's going back to them for the second time.
You should also flash your machine with the latest firmware. This may fix
your USB problem.
I'd back up, wipe the drive, reinstall, flash if necessary, pull all the
USB devices, then plug them back in one by one. Also check all the USB cables.
This will probably fix your problems. If it's a burnt out USB socket, then
there's not much you can do.

One other thing. Unfortunately, that machine has USB 1.1 type A specification
ports. So you could be having problems using USB 2.0 peripherals.

The Cowboy cheerleaders were pretty hot also! I do recall the Cowboys had a

Thanks but we went through this already. I've reinstalled OSX after a
reformat with no apps
and no peripherals other than the stock keyboard and mouse - it kernel
paniced later sitting idle -
I think it was only 20 minutes this time. I replaced the RAM, traded
sockets, put in only one
at a time, etc... still crashed. That was almost 2 years ago, so it isn't
10.4 - we've been through
a few versions of OSX (what is with the updates ever 2 months? I guess OSX
is never done... ;-)
It's crashed a HD irreparrably once already from multiple kernel panics over
time. I installed
a new HD and OSX yet again - same thing. Crashed later that day.
I've replaced the mouse with the stock mouse - it crashed again later that
day (the average then
was 4-5 times a day - it comes and goes...).
It's a bad USB buss/motherboard, guaranteed, esp. since it will lock up,
freeze or kernel panic just sitting idle,
typing email, etc. Not application related or bad install. Second HD, 3rd
install of OSX and it still
crashes - the motherboard is the only thing I haven't been able to replace
and test.
