So now I am mising No Limit.
I am diggin Cubase, but heres the thing....
What are your opinions and suggestions....
After say...drums and guitars have been laid down
and you have a basic rough mix and now want to lay down the bass guitar...The
mix is too loud and you can't hear the bass thru the mix for realtime monitoring
while ou play/record.
I know I could just turn down the mix, but I don't want to.
I want to hear the rough mix BOOMIN and feel it while I record without pushing
the monitors way up to compensate for turning the mix down.
SO...... thats where No Limit was usful for me.
I would jus throw no limit on the track being recorded and crank it for live
monitoring. Worked perfectly.
SO.... how do I do this with Cubase?
I can strap a compressor as an insert before disk, but I dont wanna do that.
What is the solution?

LOL! Actually, LA2A's of course suck for Bass - I was just
thinking of the most expensive single-channel justification
that came to mind. Fairchild 660 might've been an even better
example.
Seriously, though, Brandon, an a/b/y splitter and a cheapie
comp of any kind that doesn't suck royally for bass would get
you to the method I was referring to - coupla hundred bucks
maybe - and if you get a halfway decent compressor for a bit
more $$$, you'll be able to use that for other stuff, and the
a/b/y splitter will come in handy for simultaneously tracking
an amp'ed guitar signal & a direct signal, so you can process
the direct signal later with Amplitube or something like that.

If you have Cubase 4, use the control room for your CR monitor send as it is
separate from the mix buss. You can insert a limiter there as well as set
your monitor levels without affecting the mix to disk. Regardless of
whether you use the CR as a full mix/tracking monitor solution, you can
still use it for this one purpose (and setting up multiple monitor
switching, mono fold down, surround, etc).
Some limiter options:
Flux comp (the clipper is pretty good)
Spectraphy - sometimes it's excellent, sometimes I'm not sure I like the
very top end, but for monitor limiting, it's great, esp. for the money.
Voxengo Elephant - a bit duller than others but hard to say if it's enough
to matter.

for native DAWs and work

I have all the Buzzroom stuff and am with you here, Neil. My favorite is the
multiband compressor "Buzcomp CP5". But my real favorites are "The Gold
Series" to Kjaerhus.
But noone of these are freeware.
