Can someone please explain to me the whole ...."if you record to 24 bit resolution
you don't need to worry about tracking with compression" thing....I may be
mis quoting, but it is something to that effect..
Something to do with not having to worry about clipping????.....

It has to do with not needing to worry about tracking as hot as possible to
get the maximum number of bits. At 24 bit, you can just set your record
levels a bit lower and still get plenty of resolution. You don't need to be
riding just below redline.

When I am tracking I always try to get the levels at a -10 average on the
PARIS channel meters.
Am I compromising resolution?
Should I be tracking at levels just below clipping?

I made a macro to clear all my clip lights. This way I can push my signals
all the way up to the top without clipping. That gives you the max signal
to noise ratio which is a good thing. Just don't clip.

My default "new recording template" has all gain trims set at +3db. (as well

as having enabled "show meters as pre-fade".)
That way, I can rejoice at watching those gloriously coloured VU's
in full flight during a session, and not stress about the peak "led's" too
much.

I don't know to be truthful. I usually strap a transparent compressor like
my Forssell or an RNC across signals that are likely to be all over the map
and set it so that things peak out around -3, but I don't sweat it at all if
I'm peaking at -10. That gives me plenty of resolution without obvious
compression artifacts.
