In my ongoing quest to get this 3 x RME card/4 UAD-1 card DAw happening
without the occasional crash or crackling in the audio, I am experimenting
with 2nd Magma chassis (a 7 slot unit) All of my UAD-1 cards are in the 13
slot chassis and all occupy IRQ 19 with the host card in mobo PCI slot #4. I
have been able to get my two HDSP 9652's on IRQ 17 & 18 by putting them in
the 7 slot Magma with the host card in mobo PCI slot #3.
Adding the Multiface PCI card to this chassis scrambles the IRQ assignments
to the point that either one of the HDSP RME cards is on IRQ 16 with the
video card and/or one of the cards is sharing an IREQ with the UAD-1
cards............both bad scenarios. However, putting both HDSP cards in
slots 1 & 2 of the 7 slot Magma and my Multiface PCI in slot #2 of the mobo
has allowed the RME cards to live on IRQ's 17 and 18, the UAD-1 cards to
occupy IRQ 19 and the video card to occupy IRQ 16. The DAW has been running
for over an hour in playback mode without crashing. Tomorrow I'll be
stressing it big time to see if the crackling in the audio is resolved. If
I'm successful, I'll have pushed this system about as far as this
architecture can go I think.
Though it appears that the 7 slot Magma may have solved my problem, in a way
it's sort of disappointing. I was expecting a friendlier IRQ assignment
scenario. I recently sold a 7 slot SBS chassis because after getting the 13
slot Magma and having good luck with it, I figured the Magma's were just a
better product. Now I have my doubts. I think the 7 slot SBS chassis was at
least as friendly as the 7 slot Magma, and perhaps moreso. My previous
experience with the SBS leads me to believe that I might have been more
successful with it in my current scenario than with the Magma.
Anyway.......it's hard to say and if my testing tomorrow goes well, I'll be
settling into mix mode. I've got a lot to do here.
I do have another dual core CPU and video card on order right now and a
Gigabye NForce 3 mobo. This mobo is also supposed to be friendly with UAD-1
cards. I'll probably be building another system with this. For what exactly,
I'm not quite sure If my crurrent system is stable tomorrow, I'll be
leaving it be, most likely..........yeah.......right!!!......Hey.......if
someone wants to loan me an EDS card, 442 aand C-16, I might bench this
thing and see if I can get Paris working with a dual core CPU.
That might be a worth while experiment.

I'll keep you posted on this. Don't need them right now. I've got a lot of
catching up to do workload wise. If things don't work out as I hope they
will today, I'll probably need this second system to use with Steiny system
link. Not the most optimal situation for me, but if system link actually
works as advertised, it's one that should work if it comes down to it. Also
there's another option. since I am clocking my Cubase rig with Paris ADAT,
this provides not only a common clock reference, but sample accurate
timelines as well.........sooooo....... just putting the Multiface PCI in
the second DAW and slaving it to ADAT sync from Paris should lock up all
three computers anyway without even needing system link. Hopefully I can
keep everything in one DAW though. It's a lot less hassle this way and I
would need to buy another UAD-1 and another copy of Cubase for the 2nd DAW
in order to use it the way I want.
There is a utility being used by soime folks on the uaD forum that seems to
be solving some compatibility issues between the NForce 4 chipset and the
UAD-1 card. It applies a filter to the system that relegates the the UAD-1
top only one of the CPU cores. If this same thing could be made to happen
somehow with the Paris instructions for the C-16, it might allow use of the
dual core processors with a Paris system. This might also involve some
tweaking of the Paris .cfg file and who know what else. I can sorta envision
a mushroom cloud at some point.
I'm getting ready for the coffee infusion and will be strapping on my flak
jacket and crash helment for the final testing this of the duallie Magma
thing this morning. If is don't show up again by around 3:00 PM, go ahead
and call the cops..

I was having lots of problems with it last night until Crashbasket told me
what I was doing wrong. He's a really smart dog.
It's working now. I've got the 4 x UAD-1 cards on IRQ 19 and the 3 x RME
cards on IRQ's 17 and 18 with the AGP on IRQ 16. The LAN controller is on
IRQ 17 also and has to be disabled or the system freezes up, but that's a
minor inconvenience compared to the stuff I've been dealing with. The AGP
bus architecture along with the reduced PCI slots and the absolute *idiocy*
of mobo manufacturers who insist on having two PCI slots hardwired to the
VGA IRQ is really a bummer when you start getting into needing to use lots
of PCI slots. I'm just glad I got it to work at all. I was starting to have
my doubts if this would happen. I It took two Magma's to get this to happen.
I'm pretty much pushing the boundaries of this stuff now I guess and I have
no real desire to push it any further.'m running an XP 4200 dual core CPU
right now and playing back a 32 track project in Cubase with a pretty
substantial plugin load with the buffers set to 128k (3ms). No clicks, pops,
distortion, crackling etc. as increase the track and plugin count. None at
all. I feel like I've just dodged a potentially disastrous bullet. I've been
depending on this to work and I've got a lot of time and $$$ invested in it.
Looks like it's gonna finally pay off.

Yer kidding, right? No... next he'll try to hook up the
alternative power source mentioned in another thread, and then
he's REALLY screwed.

well..........I'm having some mechanical issues with this 7 slot Magma
(mains connector and host card cable are sometimes intermittent). I'm going
to have to return it. It is good to know that this will work, though the 7
slot unit is a bit limited for my needs. Right now, 2 out of three of the
RME cards are on IRQ 17-the card in the mobo is on IRQ 17 and one of the
cards in the Magma chassis also. This means that with a 7 slot Magma, the
best I can do is have only one PCI card on IRQ 18. This is less than
optimal. It's a crapshoot but I really need to get all of the RME cards on
IRQ 18 so I can have my LAN controller (IRQ 17) active. I have a sneaking
suspicion that the next version of Cubase may have an audio over LAN
capability, similar to FX Teleport (or I may just need to use FXT in the
future) so I'm going to try it with a 13 slot Magma to see if I can get all
of the RME cards on IRQ 18. The 13 slot Magmas have more IRQ options. Other
than that, once I upgrade the CPU to a 4400 dualcore, I'll be leaving it
alone.
