I'm getting ready to do some vocal OD's on a punk project I tracked here.
I've done a few rock'esque and pop mixes but mostly I've been dealing with
acoustic instruments these days. Here's a very rough mix with the singer
playing/singing in the same room with the drums. I had her guitar (panned
right if facing stage) mic'ed up in an isolation cabinet and she was singing
into an old '58 over the (very loud) kit. I'm sure it was hard for her to
even hear herself in the cans but given the circumstances, I think she did a
good job. Not sure what kind of mic I'm going to use for her voice on the
dubs and what freq's I'm going to massage on the guitars to get more
separation so that they will sound balancd and sit in the mix. This is a fun
project but a very "brown sound"......something I'm not accustomed to
working with. I'm going to have to tune my antennae in a different way for
this one. I've already had one suggestion about cutting the rythym guitar
freqs between 1-4k which I am going to try. I was kinda' fried last night
when I bounced this down. This morning it sounds a bit heavy on the right
channel. Any suggestions would be welcome.

That's probably because you never answered my questiion about whether I
could use 32 bit Magma's with XP64 and be able to access additional RAM.

Hi DJ,
Oh I see how it is.....

This might answer your question.

http://www.uaudio.com/webzine/2006/december/index5.html

Don't know if the older chassis' behave the same as the newer ones or not.
Also not sure what xp64 might bring to the mix in the way of compatibility.

I'd try any 'fancy' vocal mics you might use on any other vocalist, but I'd
also give a very serious listen to both a 57 and a 58. Sometimes cheap, flat,
and familiar sounds good on a punk rock vocal.

Link didn't work for me either.

- - I'd say break out some old Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Bad Brains, Sex
Pistols, etc., for some reference.

rock on,

Link ain't working for me, either.

So it's "Chick-Punk", huh? I'd try that C-1 if you still have
it, but run it through your 737 to warm it up & take some of
the edge off (hit it with the compressor, too)... on a female
voice that combination it might give you just the right amount
of rasp for that genre.

Hey DJ
Link doesn't seem to be working. I've waited about three minutes to hook
up. No luck. Would you mind describing "brown sound" a little more? I've
heard the term before relative to electric guitars. Sounds kind of
poo-like, unflattering :-)

I do some "classic" punk, sort of in the 1977-79 mode...
Can't hear the tune, but, great punk is not all screaming, Joey Ramone was
a singer emulating Ronnie Spector!..I used a lawson L47 before. My 2247 seems
a bit too thick for "Punk"
Been digging a 421 as well, sometimes using the filter
I like the first CD of a Girl group called Sahara Hotnights...Check that
one out.

For vocals, either a 421 or an SM7...

Hi David,
Yes to make it more punk you need to plug in the sm57 into a peavey tnt
bass amp then crank it and put another sm57 close miced at the cone.
That sm57 then need to go to a Tascam 424 the out to a mackie mixer then
to DJs rig.

As strange as that sounds... I had a singer for a band come in once with
two small combo amps, an old beat up Radio Shack mic, and an assortment
of bad cables. I thought he was the guitar player, but soon found out
he was the lead singer. He plugged the mic into the two amps with the
menagerie of adapters and cables. I put a '57 on each amp. Once the
music rolled, he was bouncing around the room screaming into the mic
cupped with both hands. The resulting distorted mess was indeed the
lead vocal track. He was really happy with the sound I got... :-\

David.

I was able to DL the song. Definitely sounding brown. I'd give her a 57 up
real close, then work toward a more purple sound. :)

And here I was thinking, all you needed was a shure vocalmaster column
speaker and an old tube amp. Make sure the speakers are oiled though
(seriously).

ha ha I have rune vocals out into my practice PA and re amped them!
But really, the greatest punk band of all times (and one of the greatest
rock bands) recorded their greatest record's vocals through a 58 beacuse
the singer's teeth we so fucked

Isn't that just a myth? (I guess you're talking about Sex Pistols - Never
Mind The Bollocks). I saw a TV-documentary of that recording, and mr. Lydon
didn't use a SM 58 in that footage.
Another myth is that they recorded hundreds of tracks to make Steve Jones'
great guitar sound. That's wrong, he had already found "his" sound, with a
combination of guitar, amp, distortion and chorus. They just recorded one
guitar-track, copied it to another track and panned opposite. The guitar is
simply in dual mono. Then a track or two with fills, and that's it.
And they didn't have a bass-player at the time, Steve Jones had to play that
too. It's played exactly as the guitar, only one octave lower. The sound,
the power and the mix on that record is incredible. "We mean it maaan!"
(Vinyl version that is, they took away some of the magic when they mastered
the CD-version).

Heheheheh..No I refer to Mr Strummer and the album London Calling..Much more
monumental than Bollocks... I listen to LC at least every week..have not
listened to the Pistols for 20 years!
I've seen pics of Lydon with an 87 or something.

The Clash were an amazing band... Listen to Bankrobber, Clampdown, Police
On My Back, Pressure Drops, Magnificent Seven..man..great shit. Good at covers
too.

Anyway there is a good piece on the recording of LC at mixonline. By the
way..very well recorded in my opinion. Not screamy trash at all.

I think I hear phasor on Steve Jones during Anarchy For The Uk.

What, two british punk-singers with bad teeth? :-)
Got London Calling, I saw the Clash when they were touring for the album. I
love it, but I don't think of it as punk, more as classic rock'n roll. (And
that's fine with me :-)
I used Pistols "EMI" as refererence on a punk-tune I mixed. Amazing things
going on there.

EMI is about excitement for sure. something like Tommy Gun or Safe European
Home have so much more depth....Another classic and very well recorded album
is The Jam, All Mod Cons...Wow! My wife is a brit and she actually relates
more to The jam than The Clash...English Rose is lovely and so is didn;t
we have a nice time

By the by...a big influence on all these bands was a reggae band callled
Culture..please listen to 2 Sevens Clash Oh and don't forget my band The
Blizzard of 78 collaborated with reggae MC great Mikey Dread on a clash tune...
listen to it on Itunes..He is very sick right now.
