Neil,
Nice work. Kick is doing it perfectly. Multiband again?
I'd love to hear a tiny amount of short verb on those bright=20
guitar distorted chicks early on. Nice clean tone too.
What guitar/amp/mic/pre/comp setup did you use for that?
Cool.

Not finals, necessarily, but close enough to where it'll just
be a tweak or two before they're finished. I'll hand it to
these guys - they're into some weird shit, but at least they
don't want everything louder than everything else, and they
don't want all the tops of all the waveforms looking like a
bunch of Darfurian refugees standing in a canoe.
I think the guitars might be a bit raspy in a few places, but
the guys like 'em as-is.
Comments welcome....

Yep - actually the story behind the kick & snare is that we
almost DIDN'T mic them - the guy wanted to go with a triggered
kit he had programmed in his Roland TD-20 for the kick, snare &
toms, and live mics for the cymbals & hats. I told him: "You
know what, why don't I just slap a mic on the kick & snare
anyway, while we've got everything set up... can't hurt, right?"
Turns out he LOVES the live kick & snare sounds we got - we
ended up not even using the triggered sounds on those. So
anyway, it's a D-6 through a Chandler TG-2, and I had picked up
an Earthworks Kick-pad recently, so I stuck that on the kick
mic, too, since we had the kick all stuffed with towels & such
up against the head to prevent it from double-triggering on the
rebound... I figured I'd see if the kickpad might help give me
some tone right off the bat & it worked out OK. From there it
was just my usual Multiband comp/No EQ settings for the kick.

The clean tone? Again, not sure which song, because there are a
couple parts with clean tone. If you mean the tone in: "Just
When U Thought", that was the main guitarist's ESP with EMG
humbuckers through his Mesa amp & cab, if you mean the clean
tone in: "Jimmy The Pill", that was one of my Strats through
the same setup, but in that case, we also doubled it.
Mics/pres in both cases on his cab were: Audix i5 through a
Focusrite Red 8, and a BLUE Ball through a Grace101, tracked
dual-mono on each pass.

Thanks, Lamont - actually I'm kinda surprised you like it,
considering that it's so far removed from the genres you said
you normally work in.
Maybe there's a latent Metal-head inside you waiting to burst
forth! (kinda like the baby lizard-thang in "Alien", but not as
life-threateneing LOL)

Naw.. Being from Motown(Home of Rock n Roll), I grew up like many geetar players
immersed into the 70's rock scene. It's a very diverse place (Detroit) for
music. Ilove and respect all genres of music. Personally, I tooka musical
turn while in my late teens to Jazz, Gospel, and my forte funk..But, still
played Rock at times thru out the 80's. Hey!!, you had to play that Eddie
Van Halen Beat It solo! Lol! to be taken seriously in those days.. It's funny,
I still have my Red Kramer Axes from the 80's.. I have them disasembled,
but those babies with the floyd roses and 3 dual rail (single coil) ducan
humbuckers screamed!!

Neil,
I was talking about the distorted chicks and clean sound in "Just When =
You Thought".
Nice tune with a different vibe.
I'm surprised a drummer would be looking for triggered sounds at the get =
go.
You proved him wrong. Good work.

we
ended up not even using the triggered sounds on those. =
So
anyway,=20
it's a D-6 through a Chandler TG-2, and I had picked up
an =

there it
was just my usual Multiband comp/No EQ settings for the=20
