Winwood is my all time "rock star hero"... He wrote his first hit song at
age 15 with the Spencer Davis Group...He really kept his head straight,and
didn't sell out "ala" Phil Collins,Eric Clapton,Elton John,etc,etc...He does
still have an incredible voice,and his new stuff harkens back to early
Traffic days

Funny you should mention clapton, as he features prominently on the winwood
single they are playing here..

I remember reading a Rolling Stone article at the time of Blind Faith where
the writer hung out at the studio and talked to Clapton, who seemed quite
depressed. Talking about Winwood, he said something to the effect that "the
guy writes great songs, sings great, plays great keyboards, bass, and even
guitar. What do they need me here for?"

Yeah, Winwood started out on B3 and switched to guitar for a while, than
back to B3.

The only time I saw Winwood (with Traffic, at Winterland) he spent the whole
night playing bass and singing. And, of course, he was very very good at
it.

You sure that was a Bass guitar? He ALWAYS played "foot Bass" on the
Hammond in Traffic....that was their signature sound..

yes. Fender bass it was. I was kinda ticked off because I wanted to hear him
play keys. My initial memory is that he played bass all night.
I was thinking this was post-Dave Mason but now that I think of it Mason
was playing guitar. I think. Wood played some keys as well as woodwinds.
Hmmm. Think Mason played some organ, too.
I do remember that most of the night -- perhaps all of the night -- Winwood
played bass guitar. Maybe he did John Barleycorn on acoustic guitar as an
encore, and I think piano on Low Spark.
Man. I haven't thought about this in decades. It's nice to know some of those
brain cells are still there.
