I've heard that a couple of songs that I mixed were played on NPR a while
back and that another one that I recorded on a comedy CD is being used on
the soundtrack of some *animal house* genre movie that was made in Austin a
few years ago. I even heard a very brief snippet of one of my mixes in a
radio interview with an artist I recorded last year and I heard folks
talking about how they had heard a couple of songs I mixed on the radio here
but I've never once really heard one of my mixes on the radio.

I was driving down the road today surfing the channels and a song I mixed
and co-produced recently was playing on one of the local FM stations.

It was actually sorta' wierd for a few seconds. I wanted to call in and say
"Stop!!! It's not ready for this!!! I can do better!!!! and I started
picking it to pieces but then I just chilled because it actually held up
well and sounded good on the air.

It was a very gratifying feeling. I'll never forget it.

As a complete nobody when it comes to having songs on the
radio, I can agree... it's a rush, no matter what. I've heard
perhaps only half a dozen songs that I've either played on or
engineered/produced on the radio - the first about 25 years
ago, and the most recent about two years ago, and to me it's
still pretty fuckin' cool :)

Speaking of which, I wonder who's got the most radio plays
under their hat, out of the people that still hang here?
Probably Martin, yes? He might've even had that title before,
even when T-Man was still posting... I know Shania & "Boot
Scoot" got a lot of spins, but for awhile there you couldn't
turn on a radio anywhere without hearing "I'm all out of love,
I'm so lost without you, I know you were right...."

It's also funny hearing your jingles on the radio. You don't mind the
advertising so much when you're getting paid for it... "Yes, you can at
Sun Toyota!"

Bill, do you do a lot of jingle-writing?

A friend of mine in Austin landed the McDonalds jingle account back in the
80's. He built a damned nice studio, just from the revenue from that account
alone.

Definitely was a lucrative business at one time. I had a friend who sold
ads for a radio station in Rhode Island. He started selling jingles (he is
a musician, his wife a great singer) to those clients while he had them on
the phone for radio ad time. Within a few months he started his own
production company (not doing jingles anymore, but a successful company it
seems).

We have a large well-known local production company here doing jingles dirt
cheap - about what it would cost me to hire and record a couple of
vocalists. Imho, it kind of killed the market here for the most part.
Definitely not worth my time to try and compete with them. Oddly their
hourly rates are some of the highest in town, if not the highest.

I think around the early to mid 80's that may have been true, (but probably
not), but not since then.
Thanks for the thought though...that seems like a lifetime ago....my kids
were babies then, now their adults and flown the coop.

Yes, that's right...I was doing that long before I did Air Supply....I think
I recorded some of Australia's all time favorite TV / Radio commercials in
the 70's and 80's....sometimes that's an even bigger buzz....some have even
made it into the Aust Archives...

The writer that I was working with did the same here in Oz with McDonalds
jingles, and Coke, and IBM and....
Became the all-time top jingle writer in Australia during the 80's and 90's
with the best studios, including one in Singapore.

Thanks Martin,

I've heard a lot more of your mixes on the radio than I'll ever hear of
mine.

Cheers,

Deej

They are showing *Beyond Tomorrow* stuff on the satellite TV here. Some of
them I remember seeing back in the 80's. Some of them are new, I think.

Nonetheless, Deej, it's still cool - so enjoy it.. like I said,
it's still a rush no matter what! Pat yourself on the back, and
give yerself two pats if it sounds better than the other stuff
it's up against!

First – Congrats!

Second… Not so fast.

“I've heard a lot more of your mixes on the radio than I'll ever hear of
mine.”

Nothing begets radio play like radio play. You may be just beginning.

Enjoy,
Gene

Yeh, I think that the new batch of BT are current as of this year, and shown
here, but the 80's ones were made especially for the US market, still using
us, (aussie crews). It sure was interesting doing many of the stories twice,
one for international release, and the US one, with a US presenter.
They were fun days........too old now...I could do it again, they're looking
for older (experienced) crews, but the conditions and hours are nowhere near
as good as we had them.....

Congrats DJ!

enjoy the weirdness.....

I've been working in radio going on 15 years now (wow..time is flying) ....
and I still get a little creeped out whenever I hear a jingle I wrote...
or a voiceover....

interesting side note....

neither my kids, my wife, my parents... or pretty much anybody I know recognizes
my voice when I am on the air... makes me giggle...

just recently we were heading downtown to a festival and I was monitoring
one of our stations... a spot that I did was n the air and I said "wow...
listen to this moron"...

my oldest says to me "who is it dad... why is he a moron? "

I kept quiet... and about 20 seconds later she realized it was me... was
pretty funny.

may this be the first in a long line for ya DJ!
