Thanks Erling
Right now the UAD plugs are in my Steinberg VST plugin folder
DirectX is disabled in Paris
FXpansion wrapper is pointed to that folder and finds the UAD plugins no
problem.
Now do I install FFX4 chainer in the steinberg VST folder or just install it
where it want's to go and copy over the DLLs
and if I want to use Faderworks, does it also get installed into that folder
or do I just install it where it want's to go and copy over the DLLs
thanks in advance to any human who'd care to talk to me in person

Don, are we talking about the same type of Chainer? FFX4 Chainer, isn't it
Vince Burel's VST to DX wrapper?
I'm talking about this Chainer: http://www.xlutop.com/html/chainer.html in
combination with FXpansion 3.3.
Be sure there isn't any VST folder opened in Paris config file, it's just
the Chainer who shall know that folder. I believe DirectX shall be enabled.
You see FXpansion or FFX4 are making VST to DX, so I believe Paris should
have DirectX enabled so the wrappers can find Paris as a DX user.
I havn't used Faderworks but if it's a VSTplugin, I believe it shall be in
the VST folder so Chainer can find and use it the way you want.
Good luck

THe way I remember it is a little different:
-Disable Directx
-Put your wrapper and Faderworks in the VST folder identified in the
paris.cfg file.
Fire up Paris. You should be able to see the wrapper and Fadersworks as
native plugs. Load any dx/other vst plugs you want in the wrapper. Set
your delays in Faderworks.
As I remember, TOm Bruhl is the one acutally utilizing this most (my rig
is put away right now), so you might ping him specifically.

Jeff, it seems to be different ways to do this. I just know that I have
never disabled DirectX in Paris when using FXpansion 3.3 wrapper in
combination with "Xlutop Chainer". For me, it seems real logical, since
FXpansion VST-DX Adapter/Wrapper is a DX plugin, that need an opn DX line to
be used - and Chainer is a VST host that can show up VST plugins with the
help of FXpansion 3.3.
The thing I remember making problems for me, was when Paris used its own
VSTfolder in combination with FX and Chainer. Therefore I allways have VST
folder in Paris.cfg disabled, so it is only Chainer that can find the VST
plugin folder in Steinberg and FXpansion 3.3 to find the Chainer.exe folder,
that knows where the VST plugins are.
I don't use FFX4 at all because I know "Xlutop Chainer" could open much more
VST plugins on each Paris-channel for me. I have used this combination since
Dimitros talked about "Xlutop Chainer" here - I believe it must be 6-7 years
now - and I have been really happy with that "FXpansion 3.3-Xlutop
Chainer"combination to use my VST plugins. I also know it's working well
with Paris and my AMD Quad computer in Norway, with Mike Audet's new
drivers.
I know we have written about wrapper combinations here up against the years,
so if the archives are doing well and going back to the beginning of this
century, it could be found something about it with some searching.
But as said, it seems to be different ways to do this. If it workes, it
workes.

That Xlutop chainer looks pretty impressive...does it do both mono and
stereo plugs because the FFX4 is either mono or stereo.
I also tried Dimitrios' Avcon Digital and it seemed to do the trick (at
first glance) and I'll be looking at it again this evening.
Bottom line is I have a stable setup, all the plugs are playing nice with
each other and I even have two ways to deal with latency, i.e. Faderworks
and Sample slide - both have their pros and cons but both will be used.
Thanks to all who called and submitted replies. You helped remove that
insane look in my eyes which had my wife seriously worried yesterday
hehehe

Yes, it's both mono and stereo. In stereo, if I remember correct, Paris must
use channels 1-2, 3-4 and up as pair, not 2-3, 4-5 and up. But I believe
that's the way Paris allways have worked with plugins in stereo channels.
Good to hear your system now is stable and working as you wish and your wife
didn't need to call an ambulance yesterday;-)

If you have recorded stereo, let's say on channel 3 and 4 -
You're opening a stereoplugin on channel 3 in Native Inserts -
There shall be a stereo checkbox you have to activate and the system will
read channel 4 automatic, as far as I remember.
Good luck

Hey Don,
Glad to hear things are coming together for you!
When you open the native plugins list there's a little stereo box you
can check in the lower left hand corner. It chooses the
track to the right as the right channel. Sometimes Paris doesn't like
using paris mono effects with stereo natives though. It's helpful
to have the audio on the stereo tracks be exactly the same length
and with no edits. Sometimes it doesn't matter regarding the edits.

For whatever reason enabling DX and removing the VST folder is Paris config
turns my Paris start up into a nightmare of pop up error windows so I went
back to disabling DX and pointing Paris to my VST folder to take care of
things.
I'm not really happy with that ugly tan coloured interface that accompanies
each plugin as it eats up a lot of landscape on my monitors but if that's
the price I have to pay so be it...I'll get used to it in time.
I'm also using Faderworks in slot one and so far it's doing the job nicely.

Don, when you say it, I seems to remember I had the same nightmare with
popup errors when trying to remove the VST folder in Paris cfg. It's so many
years ago but something says me, if aVST folder was set for use in the
Setting Menu, Paris locked it there and remembered the VST plugins in that
folder, whatever I tried to do. It was in those days I had Ghosted, so I
believe I had a clean Paris installation where nothing was marked, so I
could start up again the experiments from the beginning. I'm pretty sure it
was the last time I was setting a VST folder from the Setting Menu in Paris,
when I got FXpansion 3.3 and Chainer to work together. I'm often using
directX plugins too, in combination with VST's in Chainer, so therefore I
never either touch DX configurations when innstalling Paris on new machines.
With Chainer I can use up to 9 VST plugins and 3 DX on each channel in Paris
or I can use up to 36 VST plugins if using 4 Chainers on each channel. But
this is just theoretical, it's the PC horsepower that makes rules for how
many plugins you can use.
But as a golden rule for most of us: Never change a good working system if
you have work to do with it!

fwiw, I use vst with no problems. I have a folder on the root level of my
C drive. inside that, I have 3 folders, named 1. VST plugs, 2. Powered plugins
3. non powered wrapped plugs.
I point the vst path in Paris to the folder 1.(vst plugs)
Folder 2. is the UAD Plugs, which get wrapped by the fxpansion wrapper. Folder
3 contains vst plugs that are problematic to paris, in vst world....usually
the newer ones are. I wrap folder 3 seperetly from folder 2. everything seems
to work pretty well....except sometimes I get unhandled exception errors
on starting or quiting a ppj that contains UAD plugs.
Hope that helps..if you need more personal assistance...you have my number
dude.

Have you tested problematic vst plugins with Chainer in Paris? I seems to
remember most of the VST plugin-problems disappeared for me when using
Chainer and not Paris to open them.

Paris...once disabled all is well
