2 EDS Cards requiring another Ensoniq card to work together [message #103909] |

1.
I'm about to pull the trigger I think at least on a Paris Rig.
The seller is telling me that the computer has two EDS Cards in it with " another Ensoniq card allowing the 2 EDS 1000 to work together..."
I've never heard of this other Ensoniq card....? Any clue on what he is talking about???
2.
Also correct me if I'm wrong BUT with two EDS cards what happens is one EDS card just clocks off of the first one.
WIth three EDS cards an external world clock is necessary? (or am I confusing this with the MECs) Can someone please sort out this clocking business for me, as well as helping me discern what is this other ensoniq card allowing the two to work together?
3.
What do I have to worry about to get the license switched so that I'm a registered user/ owner? I'm guessing this fellow doesn't have the most up to date version. what would be the cost of upgrading to 3.0?
4.
how much do all those new paris plugins cost? if i want to buy them all?

Maybe he's just talking about the connecting cable kit (which was also available separately, and is needed to make the two cards work together)? Still, some EDS cards were sold without the FX daughterboard as EDS-500s, so make sure he's not talking about something like that.

You don't need to worry about clocking the EDS cards together, no matter how many you have. That's all taken care of by the two ribbon cables that connect them.
One MEC can be run internally; two MECs can just be clocked together. After you have three or more MECs attached to your EDS cards you have to clock them from an external wordclock source.

For 2.2 and before, it's free, you effectively just download and go. V3 went to a paid license model, and if you're buying from another user, that previous owner needs to contact ID and tell them he's transferring his license to you. Then you'd contact ID and ask for an activation code.

Currently $295. I would recommend holding off for a brief time since the PARIS situation is fluid.

You'd have to ask Mike about that, he's available at the link at the top.

thanks for responding i've been interested in paris for a long time
Hmm he left a voice mail and he says
"2 eds 1000 plus another card that linked the two together"
very odd.
If you have multiple EDS cards do you just have to have a ribbon cable daisy chaining them all together? Also does this cable lie inside the computer tower, or outside? Is it basically an IDE cable? I'm just curious, I will probably stick with just two EDS 1000's but if I wanted more I'm curious what I'd have to do to chain them together.
I only plan on having two mecs so no worries there.
What do you mean holding off from purchasing v3 (if i have to at least) because the situation is fluid??
Can you link me to the ID peoples website?
Also do I only need Mike's new drivers if I'm running a multicore system?

Standard IDE ribbon connectors which you can buy as a pre-made kit specifically for the EDS, make up yourself from ribbon cables bought off-the-rack, or easily crimp a set yourself. You'll find discussion about it here and here.

Sorry, that was cryptic. I mean the PARIS game is changing rapidly. One of the relevant aspects of "fluid" is that I'm in the process of contacting ID to ask them to review the price of 3.0 software and adjust it to reflect changes between the realities of 2001 and 2009. It would be unfair to settle on a recommendation from the forum one way or the other before ID's even been given a chance to hear the reasoning (I have no evidence anyone's taken the logical next step and contacted them directly to suggest a review) let alone been given a fair chance to consider its merits and respond.

DOH, of course, ID can be found here. I know I should have an active link to them at the top by now and I've been planning to do so, but I have several other changes and tweaks to make to the header HTML which require a bit of live hand-tweaking, and I was hoping to do it all at once to minimize disruption.

I think that's correct.
