Well, if I have to watch someone masturbate, I'd rather it be a girl.

I saw her play at a festival in Silverton Colorado a couple of years ago. It
was interesting to contrast her style with the 763453734 bluegrass acts that
played that day. Most folks there came to hear bluegrass music and
definitely *didn't get it*. A lot of the musicians got it though.......and
what she was doing then was far more interesting, technically challenging
and much more entertaining than what I just saw on that clip.

What I saw on the video clip didn't reflect her capabilities.

I wouldn't say she sucks. I would say that there are much more talented
acoustic tappers out there, but they are not half way decent looking women,
so they will never be on the Letterman show. I personally am bored by solo
instrumentalists of this type. I would like to see what she could do in a
band context. To me, this is simple musical masturbation, with a little eye
candy (she looks a hell of a lot less geeky on letterman then she did at her
previous performances).

Hey, Kim, your server took John's original words, "Moist gem is bucket" and
turned it into, "Sucks big time to me."

You would? Names? Links???

> I personally am bored by solo instrumentalists of this type.

What the hell kinda statement is that?.. "of this type"
You're bored with the unique approach?
The alternate tunings???
The motif of percussives against melody and chords???

> I would like to see what she could do in a band context.

We'll I'd like to see her trace a 'turkey-hand' on Shaeffer's head but that
aint what she came on to do.

> To me, this is simple musical masturbation

You are entitled to your opinion, John, as am I. And here's mine:

I think your original reply to this thread was an insufficiently considered
casual out-of-hand dismissal of the girl's very unique approach to a common
instrument. I couldn't do what she does without spending a great deal of
time refining the completely unique approach and I don't think you could
either but thats not really central to my opinion opposing yours.

I grew up in a family of guitar players of all ages. Cousins, dad, etc.
Beginning at age 3, I went to bed *every* night hearing non-stop Chet
Atkins, Django Rheinheart, Roger Miller, the Emmanuels, Hank Snow, Herb
Ellis, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, you nam'em, coming through my bedroom wall.
I credit myself with an awfully damned good sense of what DOES and what DOES
NOT suck when it comes to guitar playing. This gal does NOT suck, period.
She's maybe gotta couple of cliche's coming up in her arrangement in that
one clip but that doesn't warrant a "Sucks big time to me."

How about, "I'm not so impressed" or "not my cup of tea but she's definitely
got something going cause she's on Letterman and I'm.... on the Paris
Newsgroup."

And if you call what she's doing "simple musical masturbation" I'd
appreciate advance notice of when you get your 3 minutes on TV.

Yeah, I play guitar and I hope to do a cover of the old Tommy James song
"Draggin the Line" this weekend. I'll try to post it when it's done.
I love that song. Excellent simple 3 part harmonies. This TD-20 drum
set has me mesmerized. Really a great kit.

The problem with people like you is that you say everyone is entilted to
their own opinion, but when there opinion differs, you argue like a little
baby. I changed my mind. She sucks, and so do you. Michael Hedges blew her
out of the water on a bad day. Unfortunately, he had no tits, so he wasn't
on late night TV.

And my name is not john.

John,

So, you're saying you're name is not John Bercik and that you are not the
author of the either of the first two posts below and that you just happen
to use the exact same fake email address as someone else who has the exact
same thought train and opinions as you?

That's a pretty weak tune she chose to play. I agree with a number of the
people who posted here that there is a certain 'why bother?' aspect to a
lot of what she does, and that she tends to write riffs more than songs.
That said, I think the same accusation can be leveled with similar, and perhaps
greater, legitimacy on Michael Hedges, Steve Vai, and about fifty million
'blues' guitar players who all sound the same. King is pretty young, and
I hope she grows into being more of a writer as time goes on. I've seen her
play live and she's devilishly charming and self effacing in person, as well
as being easy on the eyes.

For tapping acoustic players I still think Preston Reed is the best and most
interesting. I took lessons from him and concentrated mostly on twelve string
playing and slide and kind of regret not learning more of the two hand stuff
when I could.
