PARIS FORUMS now open! [message #102666] |

Hey gang - the PARIS forums you got a sneak peek at some months ago during the NG blackout are finally up and syncing normally. Those folks that are interested in the forums can just hit this temporary URL and jump in now if they like:
http://kerrygalloway.com/ParisForums
["temporary" in this case simply meaning "until we do something about a proper domain name"]
It's been a long wait, but we finally hit the spec we decided on last year - to add modern forum amenities to complement the NG while still letting those folks who prefer the USENET format continue exactly as before; to keep all PARISians, no matter which interface they use, reading from the same pools of posts; to allow folks to switch over or switch back as often as they like; to have redundancy in case one interface or the other goes down. The best part is that several PARIS development projects were waiting until the forum rollout, and now they can begin.
Those that don't think they'll use the forum interface directly can still help keep the two systems working together smoothly by doing two things -
1) watching the length of quotes in NG posts [threads get more difficult to read when posts are enormous masses of quoted text accompanied by one line like "I agree" - just quickly snip the quoted text to something reasonable before posting], and -
2) changing their attachment encoding in their NG prefs to UUENCODE instead of MIME or Apple Double. FUDForum, the platform chosen for the forums, uses Unix-based UUEncoding and MIME-encoded posts/attachments are basically broken for the moment.
Unfortunately the bulk of the temporary passwords and accounts set up between the blackout and Christmas were lost in one of many wipes/reinstalls; for right now, it'd be great if we could just move forward with new accounts, with my sincere apologies for the inconvenience.
Thanks, and enjoy!
- Kerry

PS: check and see if your email address is already registered as an account
before you create a new one. If it is, you can always auto-request a new
password, set it to one you'll remember (PLEASE don't use your ATM pin code
or the "password you use for everything" or something crucial like that - I
don't think this forum's easy to hack but I *still* don't want that
responsibility) and then set your user name to whatever you like.

I'm not sure, AA - I think I read once that OE, particularly older versions, uses UUEncode by default unless you select a different one. Want to try attaching a small pic and seeing if it makes it to the forum OK?

Kerry, is there a way to 'not' center format the text in the web interface?

The problem was only showing up on OE, not Safari or Firefox; I spotted it last week using OE on someone else's computer, but couldn't fix it from there and promptly forgot about it ("can't see if from my place!"). I suspect it was a hanging "center" tag in the header and I've closed it off now, but I don't have OE running - does it look different now?
edited to add: I also closed a div align=center, we'll see if it fixes itself between those two tweaks.

any coolio tweak for that on your end?

Unfortunately I've got nothing right now except for the observation that OE is an absolute abomination - you should see the php code for the software installs I've been doing, both for this forum and things like phpFreeChat - there are comments all through them saying //this line fixes a bug in OE// etc.
The new guy who's taken over development of FUDForum (the platform this forum's running on) ] is a guy called Frank Naude. That name's perfect - he's more than a bit like Mike Audet insofar as he's taking software that others had written off and kicking its butt. He's been a gem - for example I asked for some code to integrate phpFreeChat into FUDForum and he had it written and posted on the wiki in a couple of hours. So I've got high hopes that if I can't fix it myself he'll see the importance of the issue and code around it pretty quick
