Looking for USB or Firewire video capture device recommendations.

This if for my daughter who just got a JVS GR-D850U (mini DV) video
camcorder for Christmas and she wants to transfer her video to her laptop.
She'll also be editing in Adobe Premier CS3 I believe which I picked up from
a friend dirt cheap

This camcorder has a DV port if that helps

Saw a number of these items at tigerdirect but haven't got a clue as to what
I should buy.

I think what you really want is a firewire card, you don't really need a video
capture card. You need to check her laptop to see if it has the older PCcard
slot, or the newer smaller version. You can pick it up from newegg or a site
like that, I have a hard time finding firewire cards in local stores for
some reason.

It should cost under $50 and work with the ulead software that came with
the camera.

Correct Chuck... and to add, be sure to get a quality chipset on the
firewire card or face the reality of capture frame drop outs. Via minimum,
Texas Instruments preferred.

Well after some investigation it appears both the camera and her laptop have
identical firewire ports so I think we're good to go.

I'll find out later today after I purchase a firewire cable.

Hi Don,

If you have either OSX, XP or Vista it should 'just work'. I have been transferring
all the tapes from our 9 year old sony camcorder for the past two weeks.

On my Vista machine I plug in the camera via firewire, insert a tape and
get the import wizard. On XP SP2 the same thing happens, but the wizard is
a bit more difficult to navigate.

Our new sony has a 60GB HD, USB and Firewire so the process is a bit easier!

That's pretty well what my resident expert in video transfer told me...he'll
be over later this afternoon to walk my daughter through the process...and
have a belated Christmas beer
