MIDI Sync Anyone [message #84278]

Trying to eiher sync an external hardware sequencer to Paris or the
other way around. Have tried it with two different workstations (XP80
and a ZR76) and am not seeming to get MTC either of them like or MTC
from them that Paris will accept.

Going thrugh a USB Midisport 4X4 to get midi to them.

Any ideas?

You'll never get the ZR 76 to operate properly It doesn't send MTC from it's
output........midi clock only. You have to record to it's internal
sequencer, save it as a SMF, load it to a floppy and them import it into a
sequencer.

I actually was trying to setup for a friend that was coming over
tomorrow and thinks we should be able to use sync from Paris to drive
the Arpeggiator on the XP80. Sounds like it's a no go.

I don't know about the XP 80. the MR/ZR series was a brilliant concept which
was hoplessly flawed in it's actual implementation because it locked the
user into the onboard sequencer which is, by far, one of the most awful, non
intuitive pieces of gradoo that I've ever had the misfortune to own. I sol
my MR76 and bought an MR Rack. Add a nice midi controller and you've got a
cool sound module that works normally. IIRC, the MR can be used as a sound
engine with a sequencer. I'm pretty sure I did this with my MR76. I've got
..xml's for Cubase for the MR 76 if you ever need them.

I bought the XP80 because I couldn't get my head around the ZR
sequencer. I used an MC500 for years and figured the XP would get me
back in the game a little. Just can't stand the piano sounds...you
think they borrowed them from an old MT32.

Won't work. You'll need something to translate the MTC to midi seq timing.
Try picking up a PPS-2 on ebay for cheap.

Search around on the web for some kind of free audio app that
has MIDI (or some free standalone MIDI app? There might be
something like that available, what with all the freeware
that's around nowadays) assuming you don't have a separate
platform you could load & use for this purpose.
I used to use an older version of Logic for MIDI-only with
Paris when I had an XP-80... worked perfect. Sync'ed great...
you just need to make sure to give it a measure or two lead-in
and I found it worked better to slave Paris to the MIDI app,
not the other way around like the manual says.

I used to do it by using a software sequencer in the middle. If you have an
old version of Cakewalk or maybe a demo of an app you can try out for 30
days, it works this way.

Download Hubi's MIDI loopback. It's free. This gives you internal MIDI
ports to work with.

Set PARIS to send MTC through one of the HUBI ports into your software
sequencer.
Set the software sequencer to see MTC in the HUBI port, and output MIDI
CLOCK through the 4x4 out.
Set the software sequence clock source to external MTC.
Set your Roland or ZR76 clock to external MIDI.
PARIS starts the software sequencer, which starts the hardware sequencer.
It's a little more lag time, but as long as they all synch, it should do the
trick.
