Cell phones can be a great thing. But really, there are only three times
that I absolutely need one:
1. I'm at the grocery store and can't remember what my girlfriend wanted me
to pick up.
2. My car is broke down.
3. I'm lost and need directions.
Otherwise, cell phones are just another way to make my day more busy than it
needs to be. Ultimately, cell phones, and email, and phone message machines
take me away from the second most important thing in my life: making music.
On the PDA thing. I had one, once, and I suppose that for some, they're
very very helpful. But, I find a good ol paper calender, tons easier to
use... along with my quill pen and ink.

First of all, Pete, I'm very impressed. I'm a person who not only has a cell
phone, a PDA, a Blackberry, and various other electronic prostheses without
which I'm a mouth breathing moron (OK, I'm one of those anyway, but with
lots of gadgets), part of my job is actully to run the Blackberry servers
that let other people get their email on their gadgets. If you've made it
this far without a cell phone you really, really might want to think about
sticking with what's been working.
That said, if you decide you want a phone and a PDA I'd take a serious look
at the Treo 6xx model. It's a Palm based phone/PDA. Palm devices work on
Windows, Mac OS Everything, and even on GNU\Linux systems. Palm devices are
also pretty easy to use. The phone in the Treo series is also very nice.
If you want pure mobile email and sync to desktop scheduling with a decent
phone a Blackberry might be another option. Personally I'd recommend staying
away from the Windows mobile devices.
To me the Treo is the best compromise between having a pretty damn good phone,
decent email device, and a Palm PDA. Also, you can get a memory card upgrade
and listen to those newfangled MP3 things ;-)

P.S. Depending on what state you live in you might want to get a Bluetooth
headset. In CT where I live it's illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving,
so a BT device is almost a necessity.

There was a time when I didn't have one and didn't think I'd ever use one.
Then I got one, and I wondered why it took me so long! I spend a fair
amount of time at work, and my commute is typically 35-40 minutes. Having
the cell phone let me have more time talking to my wife, and it has really
helped when it comes to changing plans, running errands, etc. My
sister-in-law and I drove from Santa Barbara to Tucson, and we got separated
in highway construction - I don't know how we would have found each other
again without the phones!

I've been using a Palm Treo 650 for a couple months now. This is the
closest thing to a Dick Tracy two way wrist TV that I've ever seen! Phone,
Palm Pilot, web surfing, camera, mp3 player and more. I put in a 1 GB SD
card and I can store 13,000+ (640x480) pictures, or eight and a half hours
of (320x240) video, a bunch of MP3 files, or a combination. I got a
bluetooth earpiece and a GPS unit. (Sits on the car dash and communicates
with the Treo via bluetooth.) I'm with Sprint PCS - I was going to go with
Verizon because they're supposed to have more coverage, but they charge Treo
users regular minutes for any web surfing...
