Software only

plugins etc that are executed entirely from within the computer hard drive,
with no
physical hardware aiding or associated with it (either inside the computer
- like
a pci card, or outside the computer - like a reverb unit).

So waves/psp/sonalksis/melodyne etc plugins are native, but Liquid Mix (a
box
outside the computer) UAD (a DSP card inside the computer).

The confusing part is that some non-native plugins are seen by host applications
as
if they are native. So Paris sees UAD plugins as native, even thought they
have their
own separate DSP card.
