It sure can tighten things up in a mix.

I agree, seems like a bad habbit somone got into back in say 1986 or so.
Even Bohnam's drums sound better earlier in my opinion.
Of course, it all depends on the material

Or make sure the room mics are at least 3x the distance from the
snare than the distance from the snare to each overhead. I like
the multiple of 3 exactly, in fact; and if the room is large
enough, try to have at least 2x the OH distance behind the room
mics before you hit the wall behind the room mics (usually not a
problem unless you're in tight quarters). Don't ever stick your
room mics practically right up against (or even merely a couple
of feet away from) the wall opposite the front of the kit - that
just gives you too many strong reflections in the rear portion
of the mic's pattern. If you can manage this kind of
configuration in whatever space you've got to work with, adding
some room mic signal to the mix shouldn't make things sound any
less "tight", they'll just contribute some ambience without
phasing or comb-filtering issues.

But then you probably all knew that. Sorry if I'm spewing
redundancy, but I figgered I'd mention it, just in case someone
might not be aware.

In all my years of recording drums, up to 1988, I never used room mics and
was always, (well, sometimes) complimented on my sounds.
well recorded overheads work really well.

Yes. I'm stillmixing the project. Liking things better without the room
mics......much less smeared.

Hey Deej, what'd you use for the room mics? Another thing I've
noticed is that using SDC's as opposed to LDC's seems to work
better (at least IMO) for room mics. Just wondering what you
went with.

I guess I do things backwards, compared to a lot of people, with
regard to overheads vs. room mics - I've seen plenty of folks
using SDC's for overheads & LDC's for room mics - personally, I
like the imaging you get from LDC's as overheads, and the - I
guess "smoother" (since a better descriptive term fails me at
the moment - less prone to picking up flutter, boominess, things
like that), and less-focused characteristics of SDC's for room
mics.

Try band pass filtering of the room mics and bring them up till you
can *just* hear them.

yha Deej, i really like the drum sound without room mics. My last album we
did SDC on the toms, one splitting the mounted toms and another splitting
the lower floor toms. That was everything we wanted and needed for picking
up the room.

I like to bring in the room mics in sparse sections of the tune (maybe verse,
or bridge), and drop them out for the fuller sections like choruses.

Another option is to gate them keyed to the snare mic...gives a believable
snare ambience, but doesn't muddy up the toms and kick.

Cheers,

Kris

We used AT 4060's on OH's and some kind of Sony SDC mics for the room. These
mics belonged to Ed Stasium and I wasn't familiar with these Sony mics. They
are old, no longer manufactured and run on a very expensive and hard to find
battery. Bought him some of these batteries for his trouble. I had to order
them out of some place in Chicago.

I'll probably be talking to him in the next couple of days. I'll ask about
the mic. It's got a lot of *brightness* to it.

The Sony's - are they those ones with the sorta rectangular or oblong-ish
windscreen?

Nope. They were about the size and shape of an AGK C460B, but they were
metallic (silverish) colored IIRC.

I seem to always end up with 80-90% OH's and 10-20% spot.
