Remember that scene in the first Star Wars where Han Yo-Yo is getting the
Millennium Falcon ready to take Whiny Luke and Slinky Leia of to see, well,
something important I forget now. Or maybe Slinky Leia wasn't there yet,
it was just the Whiny Luke and Whiny C3P0 and Perky Little R2 at that point.
Anyway, in a very slapstick moment that was sadly missing from the later
Star Wars movies, Harrison Ford as Yo-Yo is all talking up his ship up like
it's the most BALLING thing ever and it did the something or another run
while making parsec tea and all. So they're finally ready to go and fight
the Greatest Battle in History of the Galaxy but first they have to hire
Yo-Yo to taxi them there 'cause they don't have any money and they live on
this shitstorm little backwater planet that's like the Kearney, Nebraska
of the galaxy and the best they can find to get them to the Greatest Battle
in the History of the Galaxy is this shady drug/gun/whatever runner they
met in a bar. So Yo-Yo jumps in the pilot seat and flips a bunch of switches
and fires up his shitty jalopy of a Millennium Falcon and it makes all of
these cool noises and beeps and the engines start to whine and the lights
are all flashing and then it goes BBBBBBRRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMPPP
and all the lights turn off? Well, that's kind of how I feel getting my studio
up and running again, expect of course that I don't have any androids in
my house or a Wookie either, which is probably good because I have a cat
and if he could beat me at chess like a Wookie could well, screw me I'd have
to give him tuna fish EVERY DAY.

All of which is to say that I was getting out my bass to start working on
a couple tracks on my fancy new Millennium Falcon DAW and . . . my SansAMP
Bass DI has gone to the great DI hereafter where I'm sure at this moment
it's covorting with it's bass DI family in eternal bottom crunching bliss.
Now then, I'm a dub/reggae/electronica guy so I'm EXTREMELY picky about bass
sounds, and most of the time I like to actually play them. I can program
a bass line but bass needs to be one of the really organic sounds in the
kind of music I make which can sound very non-organic at times. Here's what
I liked about the SansAMP.

- it was happy to work with any kind of bass. It would boost the lowest output
Danelectro to mixer burning levels, but happily deal with a fancy new active
bass as well.

- it didn't have much color on its own, but it also got everything out of
the bass. That is, it didn't sound 'cool' like an Ampeg mic'ed up, but it
would dutifully pass all of the frequencies coming out of the bass, at very
least, and let me work with them later in the mixer with EQ and compression
and so on.

- but even so the EQ could be useful in many situations.

- it had multiple outputs, XLRs, quarter inch, pass through, etc.

Now then, I'm more than happy to just get another SansAMP but do you PARIS
loving analog mixing golden ears types have suggestions for a better box
to be used to plug a bass directly into a mixer or recording device?

Thanks,

TCB

Still use my Avalon U5 all the time for bass. My favorite
bass player in Nashville, Michael Rhodes, uses a U5 and a
Tube Teck CL1 compressor for his main tracking rack...

Did you try checking the battery?

:)

I think the Sansamp's a good one for the money, and I've got
one myself; I think it'd be hard to replace with anything
better for that price range, but I'm sorta interested in trying
one of those Hartke BassAttack ones, too. Only Seventy bucks,
and it makes me wonder if I can get that aluminum cone sound
out of a DI.

Fresh battery, cleaned everything inside with contact cleaner checked to
make sure the batter posts were live.

But thanks for asking ;-)

This might fit the bill for you, if you're into passing through what's
there. Make sure you also use a good quality cable, no HOSA crap.
Personally, I'm using the Monster Bass, YMMV.
Try ebay to see if you can locate one of these, no idea what they're going
for.

If you're more into even order harmonics, you might try getting a tube pre
with an instrument in.

Or another SANS since you know what you had and liked it.

Neil, wouldn't a really fast preamp do about the same thing?

I dunno, but I doubt it - the Hartke DI, like the Sansamp,
appears to have some tone-shaping things going on that a
straight-ahead preamp doesn't I've got an Avalon 737 that works
great as a bass DI, but its certainly not what I'd consider a
fast preamp. I've DI'd bass on my Grace's, which are faster
than a shithouse mouse, but you can't quite get that "clank"
out of 'em, tho.

ahhh.. you're looking for the fuzzies to go with it. Gotcha.
Happy New Year man.
Back to nose on the grind stone with this Pulsar.. I'm really impressed so
far with the tone of the synths, having some config issues though working it
as a busmixer yet.. I'll get it figured. Will post up when I have something
worthwhile to mention

The U5 has 6 switchable tone shapes that work really
well. It's way faster than the 737... I also have a
little Yamaha Nathan East eq box we sometimes put in front
for a little more control...

I can't seem to get XTC mode to do what I want it to do with Sonar. I'm also
having to use an older version of Creamware until the previous owner of the
card gets it all sussed out / creamware returns from hiatus. I'd hate to
waste your time on dealing with 3.1 SFP when the expectation is to move it
to 4.0 asap.

The Avalon suggestion is a little tempting to me as well, I don't usually
need real fast.

What's up with the Scope stuff? I'm getting reasonably good with it, though
I'm still a beginner. If you think I can help certainly let me know.

I have a few bookmarks on my work machine about XTC mode. Frankly, I think
CW would be well served to get it working much better but there seems to
be little interest in doing that. As soon as you get 4.5 up and running feel
free to ask me questions, and I'll post the XTC links next time I'm in front
of my work machine.

Yep..The Avalon U5 is a killer Bass/Guitar Preamp. You may also want to checkout:

-The Focusrite Instrument channel (Platinum range)..
-Art Pro channel..

You might want to try a BBE D1-100 direct box. they have the bbe
enhancement built in. The bass "players" I've had here prefer the avalon
737 for bass DI . I dont have a U5. Will i die without one? These things i
must know.

Do you have any experience with the Radial stuff? I haven't used the Bassbone

myself, but the JDV Mk 3 has given us a neutral, "broad band" signal for
Bass,
so I'm guessing that the Bassbone would give more of the same. Both have
lots of
I/O s too.

Dear Aaron,
Please email me , I lost all my inbox this week, Happy new year !!
Regards,
Dimitrios

ps: If you email creamware info@creamware.de and give them the serial number
of your card they will transfer it to your account.
Ask them also directly for a 4.0 download for the card.
The 4.5 version needs to be bought though.
I myself still work with 4.0.
There was no update or bug fix.
Just some plugins to buy with...
I already had 80% of them so did not bother...
Regards,
Dimitrios

What I'm looking to do is use the synths and mixer in XTC mode with Sonar
using ASIO. I'd like to have the plugs show up in SONAR along with synths..
this is doable?

I'm not a Sonar user, so I can't help much. But there is a whole section of
the planetz forums dedicated to XTC mode. Read those and then ask a few questions.
