Hey guys,
Here's a strange one. I use my laptop live sometimes. Usually it's great,
no problems, quick setup, and a Ableton Live project with all of my stuff
in it. However, sometime I have problems if the electricity is flaky at the
venue. I get all kinds of noise and crap out of the laptop (I'm using an
RME HDSP cardbus rig), and it's the laptop power supply. If I unplug the
laptop and run it off the battery the noise goes away. Any guess why this
happens and what to do about it?

Sounds like a ground loop problem. Unplugging kills the loop. If you
have a a three prong plug to your laptop PS, you might try one of those
cheap orange adapter plugs from Home depot and the like. Worked with my
old laptop.

Oh god, I'm such a moron. Of course it's a ground loop. I run two amps all
the time so I know how to deal with this, I guess I just forgot that laptops,
uh, kinda use electricity too and, you know, obey the laws of physics.
Give me a shout soon about doing a Steinberg night at ECCM. Maybe we can
do a Focusrite Liquid Mix night too ;-)

First, try to lift the ground on the laptop power supply, or get a battery
backup/conditioner to run on the road to feed the laptop. $40 oughta get
something decent for that purpose.

Hey guys,
Thanks much. Of course it was a ground loop. As I mentioned to Morgan I use
two amps all the time live which means I have to deal with this stuff all
the time, it just didn't enter my mind that a laptop would have the same
issues. I'll just carry one of the cheater adapters with me and should be
fine.
