I've given up on trying to make Paris run under Windows 7 (BSOD immediately upon program launch) so I've decided to go back to XP. I've gotten everything running great in a non-updated Win XP SP3 machine, very excited....problem is I ran all the updates (about 3 years worth or so) and now the Paris init hangs everytime at initializing EDS/DirectX effects.

Is there a known update that I shouldn't have loaded? I may try unloading Media Player 11 and see if that makes a difference. It's the only thing I know of that would have dinked around with DirectX.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks
Michael

Hi Michel, could this be Pace related maybe? I've had Paris hang at startup because of Pace.

No I don't think so. It was loading just fine with straight XP SP3 from the 3 years ago or so build...run Windows updates, poof, hang at init EDS/DirectX. I'm going run Win repair again and start over at the SP3 stage and update very slowly which will be a bear because there are 95 or so updates since then.

BTW, I backed out of Media Player 11 and 11 runtime with no effect....also took out NET framework 4 with no effect.

OK the culprit was Internet Explorer 8. After I rolled it back, the init EDS/DirectX hang went away. I'm not sure why this would decide to interfere after all these years....Microsoft fiddling with things as usual. There's probably a way to repair it in the registry but I'm not going to fool with it since it's not a heavy use internet machine.

Also successfully using the XP multicore scherzo. On a 2 EDS card, 2.8 ghz P4 HT/MSI 865PE 2003 vintage machine, I have a 28 track mix loaded with DX plugs and a few EDS plugs running at 32%-ish processor performance on one core and the second (fake HT core) one around 1 - 5%. Very nicely responsive Paris setup.

I am in the process of moving to a Protools 9/Presonus StudioLive firewire setup. Having Protools, a new computer and the StudioLive in hand, I'm not excited about repurchasing all the plugs but the older stuff that still works fine in Paris is now orphaned in modern DAWs. However, it's time to move on so to speak.

I'll still operate Paris to access my older projects and master new ones. Actually looking forward to having the best of both worlds!

Hey Mike, im in the same boat as you, moving over to Reaper/focusrite saffire 56 and my old trusty 2 card Paris in the background for now. I am on the fence for protools 9 thow. I take it your protools rig will be on win7?

Cheers
Rob

Yep, I have PT9 running on a seperate new Win 7 dual core laptop for the moment (a big i7 quad or 6 core tower coming this Summer as funds allow) driving it with firewire from the StudioLive. I also have the direct outs from the StudioLive driving the IN boards on my MEC, using a DB-25 to multi TRS cable. A session I did just a couple of days ago, I tracked with PT and Paris simultaneously using this setup. Worked flawlessly!

I was "on the fence" too regarding PT until I did some research on what the now native PT9 and modern plugs are capable of and was just blown away. I decided I was cheating myself not to at least have access to some of that action. As far as I'm concerned tracking and mixing will always be tracking and mixing and Paris does that as good as anyone. PT is just another tool in the toolbox...if anything a compatibility sales tool and a modicum of credibility with customers who only know the buzzword Protools.
