I swear by Fletcher's Mercenary Editions. I've delt with him for years, and
he a true gear guru.

My Great River Mercenary stuff is the best, it don't get no better. I've
never used the 1969, but the folks who swear by it are unimpeachable, and
LUUUUUV to get my hands on one.

Having said such, that's an awfully low price for one in good condition....

Jimmy

What I actually/urgently need is a pro 8 channel pre to do drums, etc... and
this one just kinda poped up locally. Man, I can't make up my mind and $1500
could get me close to a good 8 channel pre.
Any suggestions other than "CONTROL YOURSELF GEAR SLUT"......?

If I had money for 8 channels right now, I'd be looking at the True
Systems Precision 8 for clean, and maybe the UA 8110 Precision 8
monster with the tubes (and the cool blue lights...) for the more
old-school "phat" thing...

And yeah, they're both named "Precision" -- possibly because great
marketers think alike...

-- buy one, and tell us how cool it is -- Chas.

Yeah, I've had my eye on the "True" box for a while, for a go-anywhere
laptop rig I'm thinking about putting together. If you look on their
site and see who's using their stuff -- kind of convincing...

Maybe they'd send you one for a test-drive...

Keep us posted -- Chas.

I love my Precision 8s. Transparent, plenty of noiseless gain
even for ribbons. Almost too much gain for drums.
Might want/need a comp in line to lower it's output into Paris
if you want to push the levels up at the pre.
Built well although I have one channel who's phantom
is fried. It may have been on while patching (big no no).
I heard this might be a flaw in the design. It's a drag
that the line ins are in the same jack as the mic input.
I have to crawl in back to swap them out from time to time.

They sound great though. I bought two and use them all the
time. Big smile on everyone's face even when compared to Neve's.
More clarity, less edge/iron.
Tom

Hey Tom -- thanks for that perspective... That unit is still first on
my list if I get around to putting my little "go anywhere" laptop rig
together... Want to run that with the RME Fireface box -- whole bunch
of channels available for whatever one might encounter in live
situations, and the True box has (I think) an extra set of balanced
outs -- to give back to the live sound guy, I figure -- bound to be
better pre's than most anything they'd usually have...

And of course -- would be nice to have those channels available in the
studio when not doing remote stuff...

thanks again -- Chas.
